Decent Monitors

Re: Decent Monitors

Listened to some today mainly compared the ESI's to the M-Audio BX5a
They are suppossebly very similar they look almost the same.
Sound wise very different.
The M-Audios had an extended bass range especially for a 5" they sounded quite full but lacked alot of detail in the high end.
The ESI's on the other hand had a very chalky sounding high mids that I really didn't like more high end but not neccesarily detailed. Neither had harsh highs though (like grating peircing highs).
The M-Audio's are only 300 (ESI's 399) so I will re listen tomorrow but might buy them. Neither were anything on the 8 inch Yamahas but for over 600 each that is understandable.

Re: Decent Monitors

If you have room, try to get one with an 8" speaker, to get more fidelity on basses.

Personally for near field monitors 8" is too much bass for my taste. The NS10 Yamaha's although they sound like crap had the right idea for size.

Yeh I have quite a small room and I'm worried that bigger speakers 1) won't sound as good at lower levels (not sure if this has any merit) 2) will not develop the bass as well at close distances while having too much for my small room.

Re: Decent Monitors

Put the Bx5a on LayBy as its the last ones they have (these are the old stock ones not the Deluxe ones which retail at $459) Now I just have to sell some pedals to pay for them

Re: Decent Monitors

m audio bx5a or bx8a. I have the 5a set and they have served me well for over a year. nice, flat response. I also used my stereo to monitor before, when i switched to these i got much more accurate mixes. i got mine for $199 on sale.

oh how i love my BX8a's. accurate mix is exactly right. so far my mixes sound the same on every system i've played them on. 4 systems so far.

+1

Bass traps, bass traps, bass traps.

I was just going to go off on the subject. I think any decent set of speakers (high end) will do for monitoring, as long as you know the limitations of said speakers, and know what the room you mix in does to the sound.

I for instance know that while in my bedroom, a mix might sound bassy, when its put on a cd and played in a car, it will lack bass.

hmmm. how does it sound on other systems besides the car ? other cars or other stereos ?

i find that a speaker's or more precisely a stereo systems' limitations not only cannot be worked around, but quite the opposite. the limitations are actually imprinted on the track.

when i listen to files of say old school music that someone has burned from their record collection i can actually "hear" their stereo. if say, the cd recorder is plugged into a Sound Design stereo...the mp3's sound trebley and weak as you'd expect. and when the file was made from say a Marantz the file is rich and full. kps doesn't matter. i've heard 320 kps files that sound like a Sound Design stereo and 96 kps files that sound like a Pink Floyd concert - immaculate. part of the cause is the cheap speakers and stereo.

but then, you did say "high end" speakers.

if one has to buy high end speakers for the job, i'd suggest buying the BX8a's. i'm sure they'd sound good on the stereo too.

Behringer the Truths are great. Some of their stuff isnt that good, but my buddy has had the Truths for years without any problems. Very gpod basic moniters for a cheap price.
Me?.. Im luvin' my old very warm sounding old EV Sentry 100A's with my Parasound Amp. I doubt if even new Mackies, great as they are, would sound this sweet.
Someday I intend to have Mackies, but I'll run a junction box for the option of using the EV's.
