Decent pair of headphones?

Well, it's time to face facts... I'll soon be moving into an apartment and just won't be able to crank my amp up to play. I'm looking to buy a practice rig soon, either a Line 6 POD or one of the new Fender G-DECs and a pair of headphones. I'd like to keep the cost of headphones limited to $50-60 at the most, what would you guys recommend?

Do you want lots of bass, or more clarity?

Eh...some "pro" headphones you can find at guitar center that are pretty good are the Sony MDR-7506/MDR-V6 (the same thing), you should be able to get them for about 100 dollars. Umm...yeah...if you feel like it, check out www.head-fi.org and just look around there, it's crazy so search for stuff.

I'm just looking for accurate (as uncolored as possible) sound reproduction, not necessarily a huge bass response.

I have a pair of Sony Mdr-v300 phones and I love them. I use them all the time w/ my minidisc player, and also for late night jamming. I paid about $60 CDN for them, and they sound better than some of the $200+ Sennheisers that I tried out before I bought the Sonys.

You're not going to get very accurate response for 50 beans, man.

You will also want to look into open ear headphones, as opposed to closed ear.

Well, I know I'm not going to be in pro studio quality gear here, but I was asked if I was looking for clarity or more emphasis on bass response. My choice of those two is clarity. I know about what kind of sound quality I should expect in that price range, I was just looking for a few tips of what models to look at (or avoid like the plague).

not to hijack your thread fretfire, but i am in the market for some headphones too. i want some that can sound good with distortion. all the ones i have tried sound very bad (fuzzy, fizzy, buzzy, etc).

I would recommend Grado SR40's. They run for abotu $50/pr, are hand assembled in Brooklyn, NY, and will blow anything in that price category away.

I don't know if Entymotic Research makes $50-60 headhphones, but if they do, this would be another great option.

I've got a pair of sennheiser HD 447s, but they seem well tubby in the bass to me, not really that happy with them, but I have only used them with a MD player.

The ath-m30 by audio technica has a really ballanced sound and isn't too expensive.

Get the Grado's. I have the SR-80 and when you wear them you'll think you're hearing for the first time. Like you've put new ears on your head. You won't regret it. They are great for hearing minute details and mixing.

THey don't make the SR40 anymore, the SR60s are good 'phones however.

Yep, I'd go with the Grado's or with Sennheisers. Both of them get consistently high reviews...

I bought a pair of Sennheiser HD515's (bottom of the high-end range) and they sound great. Played mostly through a 2 grand CD player tho lol...
