Decisions Decisions (dammit!!!)

Shouldn't I be making the deciscions at the store before I buy them?

Silverburst

Pro: sounds a little crisper/clearer/tighter/focused. Wife likes the way it looks, and it has the ebony fretboard.

Cons: It looks like a metal-head guitar and my hair's too short. It costs a lot more and resale would pay for the brown one and then some. I already have a psuedo-metal guitar in a gothic V painted white with an EMG in the bridge.

Brown

I like the more traditional looks, the rosewood is pretty dark and streaky unlike most the faded dry boards Gibson puts out anymore. Cheaper at only $1000.

CON: doesn't have the ebony board and is slightly more muffled sounding, less clear, than the silverburst.

Both would be getting new pots, caps, and pickups either way.

:32:

Do you really need to sell one of them? :D

Is the brown one the natural burst or do the new SG's have a new finish?

Re: Decisions Decisions (dammit!!!)

I'd say keep them both for a little bit and keeping playing both to make a better decision if you really have to sell one.

That's not really going to help at this point because to see how they'll really shine I'll need to make the upgrades in poits, caps, and pickups. I just have to decide which one.

The silverburst is probably a bit better of a gutiar with the ebony board and grover tuners. But seeing how its more the collectible, I'll probably play with the brown one and store the silverburst to keep it in new condition. But I do loves me an ebony board with white binding - hey that gives me an idea, I'll just buy a silverburst Les Paul!!:banghead:

Re: Decisions Decisions (dammit!!!)

What's wrong with short-haired metalheads?

Looks don't matter. Buy the one that sounds right.

Re: Decisions Decisions (dammit!!!)

I like the natural burst, but I like the neck binding on the silverburst better than the creme on the natural.

Re: Decisions Decisions (dammit!!!)

I like the looks of the brown much better.

But both of 'em are pretty sweet tho.

I'm at a point where I really want to buy only guitars I'll play, I wouldn't (for now) buy something just to have it sit and kept nice. I take great care of all my gear but I still would only buy/own guitars I'd play. Just my opinion and I know you're a guy who goes through a lot of gear and you enjoy it, so your perspective will definitely be different.

Re: Decisions Decisions (dammit!!!)

I've sold alot of guitars that loked great but sounded "meh" and dont miss a single one of them.

I've sold some real tone machines that weren't much to look at: I regret selling every single one, and kick myself constantly for it.

Re: Decisions Decisions (dammit!!!)

Each one has its faults and pros.

It's not like there's only a handfull of SG's out there.

Unload both and keep looking.

Re: Decisions Decisions (dammit!!!)

If so many people here didn't know my address, and would likely hunt me down for doing so, I'd refinish my '62 LP (SG style) in that Silverburst. That would look spectacular with that tiny pickguard.

Yeah, I dig it that much.

Re: Decisions Decisions (dammit!!!)

Tattooed, the "Silverburst" finish does not remind me of "metal" guitar playing in the least. In fact, it looks more Buddy Holly/Duane Eddy/Chuck Berry...by printed page technology.

The look of a "duotone" image is starkly 1940's' to mid 1960's...before the prevalent use of full color imaging, from both photographic and printed images were common and expected.

What I am driving at, is the "silverburst" replicates a duotone image of the past. A duotone image on the printed page takes on a "metallic" sheen, as a result of the same image, being printed in nearly the same position...but in two different colors!

Duotone images are obviously printed in black ink... and a diiferent color of the same image is applied near, giving a deep...and (yes) metallic "pop" to the image.

This predates "metal music" by a number of years. Duotones are something that you commonly see in 1950's adverts, and once exposed to the secret of the duotone image, is obvious...but no less striking.

Here is a linky showing duotones...and the more strikingly metallic image, is the second image in green.

a far better example, overall:

i'd keep the naturalburst. The thing that really bugs me about the silverburst is how the silver peeks out from the edge of the pickguard by the lower horn it makes the pickguard look out of place

Re: Decisions Decisions (dammit!!!)

Yeah, I like the looks of it too. You've got me wanting one now. I love SG's!

I think you found a buyer for the natural burst, which settles the qustion on which one to sell. Personally I think Silverburst is ugly, as are all SGs. But seeing as you like them, I have to say keep whichever one sounds and plays better for you.

Re: Decisions Decisions (dammit!!!)

That's awesome looking. Is that a repainted Goth Series? I notice it has a half moon at the 12th fret.
Nevermind, I just saw where you talked about the guitar in another thread.

Re: Decisions Decisions (dammit!!!)

TC, I would keep the Silverburst SG, because I think your point its metal aesthetics is a moot one. There are some guitars you shouldn't use outside of a metal band... but this is not one of them. You gotta make the guitar look suitable for yourself - and I think most outside of a jazz or country setting would fly with that.

If you go with the guitar with the less desirable tone, you will no doubt regret it. The acoustic tone is, on the whole, unmodifiable.
