But I would define 'direct mount' as any pickup that is neither mounted with rings or a pickguard...springs or not. You don't know until you get in there in look, and I've seen companies define their guitars as having 'direct mount pickups' but they have springs under the screws. So, I go with it. There is an elegance to having the cavitiy routed to the precise depth, and the pickup just screwed down. I don't know if that makes a difference in sound, though (someone here may have tested that). But it would be a pain if you need to adjust the height or eventually swap pickups.
