Definitive Pick Test

TwilightOdyssey

Darkness on the edge of Tone
A couple of months ago, my pick of choice was almost impossible to find; Fender Premium Celluloid Heavy. So, I switched to the Dunlop Ultec 1.14mm picks.

I like the long life of the pick, but last night, 1/2 way through our set, I grabbed a Premium from my pocket, when the Dunlop got shredded down.

Although the Fender shreds in like an hour, I have to admit: These picks are WAY BETTER!!!!!!

The articulation was so much better, the sound was brighter, had greater attack, and pinched harmonics were SCREAMING from the guitar.

So, it's back to the Fender picks for me again. I'll just have to live with the low lifespan ...

Re: Definitive Pick Test

EWW!!! Normal pics! ;)

Jazz III's for me, ever tried em?

Re: Definitive Pick Test

Glad to hear it!!

Im using the Dunlop Delrin .96mm picks,, ive been using the same pick for about 3 months now and still hardly any wear..crazy little things :laugh2:

Re: Definitive Pick Test

s'funny how the longer i've played guitar, i have definitely developed a 'sylvia plath' approach to strings and picks ... i play 'em until they disintegrate .. i like the sound of aged strings (as long as they arent gritty) and worn down picks (as long as they dont have jagged notches on the edge that catch on the string)

Re: Definitive Pick Test

I agree. Anytime I stray from Fender medium or heavies, I always come back. The type of plastic they use just has the sound I like.

Re: Definitive Pick Test

Man . . . I can't wait for the day when I'm good enough to wear out a pick, break a string, or scratch the pickguard. :yell:

Re: Definitive Pick Test

Jeez I just have a load of random picks lying around and just grab whatever I can find. Although I prefer sonething a bit lighter than you guys usually a .73

Re: Definitive Pick Test

The jazz 3 is like a small version of the Tortex 2.0, My brother used to use them all the time, I cant stand them.

I just got some Tortex 2.0mm, Ultex 1.14mm, Ultex .73mm, Nylon .88mm, Nylon .60mm
from the local shop. Now the next 3 months will be pick testing :D I have heard great things about the Ultex, and the edge on the tortex 2.0mm looked pretty cool.

Last batch was an assortment of Tortex .60mm, Nylon 1.00mm, Nylon .73(I think?), A Random assortment of fender medium, and fender heavy (Conclusion: I hate Fender picks, they wear out too fast and they dont feel right, although TwilightOdyssey says alot about those Premium Celluloid Heavy, think Ill try em out)

Re: Definitive Pick Test

My fave pick is a Jazz III (black one)

So much easier to play with a small pick.

Also because its so heavy you can get more dynamic range out of it IMO, you can play very lightly or dig in very hard. Thinner picks start to bend when I pick hard (which I do... too hard) but these stay nice n firm.

Though next time I order strings I'm ordering a ton of different picks to try something new

Re: Definitive Pick Test

How do you shred the ultex down?! Those things last forever! Well at least untill I lose them, lol. I used to swear by them but now I find them too slippery and bright.

I still like those celluloid picks the most (Paul Gilbert sig. model) because they have nice grip (even more than gator grips) and have a nice sound to them.
The downside: one pickslide and it's white dust time.

Re: Definitive Pick Test

i tried those jazz 3's out a couple times, they're alright but too small. i may try em out again though, but i usually use dunlop XH's

Re: Definitive Pick Test

I like the dunlop gel picks but, they always seem to break quickly. I usually play dunlop nylon .60. I also like to try out other things though, its amazing how something as simple as a pick can alter your tone so much.

Re: Definitive Pick Test

once you use a Jazz III for a week, you pick up any other pick and it feels enormous lol - its so easy to get pinches on them as well, and going through scales is nice and clean.

Re: Definitive Pick Test

i use dunlop tortex .60's

although they are only .60, for some reason tortex's are a lot harder & stiffer than other .60's, and i've never ever ever had one break

Re: Definitive Pick Test

Jazz III's here too. I like them when they start to wear down. It is a very fast, articulate pick too.
