Delay/echo recommendations?

Re: Delay/echo recommendations?

I still like the sound of the old Rockman (yes, the Scholz from Boston) models. They're very user friendly, and while they're not pedal format, you can rig them up as such and run them through the effects loop or go straight in.

can you get those anymore? need something that works with high gain or hard rock distortion

Re: Delay/echo recommendations?

I love analog delay, and after having tried many, I settled on a Maxon AD-900 purely for the sound of the repeats. It has the original Panasonic bucket brigade chips (ala Ibanez AD-80), and will do roughly 600ms. I keep it set at around 480ms for that ethereal glow around solo lines. It's discontinued and was replaced by the AD-999, which has the current production chips and wasn't as sweet to my ears. Another nice one is the Retro-Sonic Analog Delay, which is based on the classic Boss DM-2, with the advantage of double the delay time, and a footswitch to instantly halve the set time. I'd pick either of these two over a digital emulation of tape delay. The Deja Vu is very good, and has a lot more functions than the Maxon, but to my ears doesn't match it sonically.

how does the retro-sonic stack up tonally compared to the ad-900?

Re: Delay/echo recommendations?

I used the MXR Carbon Copy as a reference for comparing simple delays and ended up just buying the carbon copy. Had it for 2 years and love it for adding texture....it's definitely warm

The comparison is almost identical to the comparison between an old Ibanez AD-80 and a Boss DM-2, with the Maxon obviously sounding like the Ibanez and the Retro-Sonic sounding very close to the DM-2. Basically two slightly different flavours of quality bucket brigade style analog delay. Either will do the job very well. I found the Maxon to just be slightly creamier, but having said that, I plugged the Retro-Sonic in again recently and was reminded why I didn't sell it when I got the AD-900. The Retro-Sonic also has the added advantages of a tone control for the repeats, and the footswitch to switch between half or full delay time settings. You can set up a useful slapback delay and the 'warm glow' delay and switch between them, which is very handy.

Re: Delay/echo recommendations?

I use an Eventide Timefactor, which is a fantastic delay. It has modulation and a nice filter so you can dial back the repeats and give it a different lo-fi character. Its true stereo in and out, so you can run it with 2 amps. In addition to all the delay stuff it does, the built in looper is a lot of fun. If you look, you can find these used for $250-$300.

Re: Delay/echo recommendations?

another vote for the space echo. so many great sounds out of this thing. also, you can use an expression pedal to really go off the deep end with it.

Re: Delay/echo recommendations?

Visual Sound H2O is very nice. It's not analog but is probably the best 'analog sounding' digital delay I've ever heard. I like it mostly because it has a seperate chorus, which I believe IS analog.

Had one and loved it. Only sold it because I got a TC Nova System that does everything.

Also, the MXR Carbon Copy is supposed to be good and one I no doubt would've owned at some point.

Re: Delay/echo recommendations?

I'll put a vote for 616 have it now and had Carbon Copy. 616 much more bright sounding more energetic for lack of better term. CC more dark weaker repeat's but I think modulation mode was better than 616 which to me can be kinda whacky. CC can go to Pink F dream land real well. IMHO.
