Delay Pedals

Hey all, lately I've been wondering about delay pedals and decided to ask here about them.

Which inexpensive delay pedal would you suggest for someone who wants one for things like that double-track delay sound like on Frampton Comes Alive, some Pat Travers records, or things like that delay on Run Like Hell by Pink Floyd, the epic sounding delay on the solo in Time by the Floyd and some Led Zeppelin recordings, or the slapback on Jeff Beck's Brush with the Blues song off of his Who Else! album, and maybe some other things.

I don't want something completely outlandish sounding, just a basic sounding delay or echo or whatever it is I'm looking for. I've been looking at the Ibanez DE7 pedal, which was recommended in the thread a week or two ago about Brian May style delay, and the soundclips sound good to me. How would that pedal do for the things I want above? My price range isn't huge, so I know thats going to limit me a lot. I'd say $100 is my price range at the moment, and like I said before, I don't want something with a billion different options, just something that could cop something like the sounds I described above.

I've never played the DE-7 (yet I recommend it to many), but it seems to be very popular over on the Harmony Central FX forum. It's cheap, sounds good, has a good bypass, and two different modes, both with 2.4 seconds of delay. I think I might even pick one up.

The DE7 would probably be a good option for someone in your situation. The Pink Floyd stuff was a Boss DD series pedal (can't remember which version, 2,3,5,6). You might be able to get one used for a little over $100

I'm a big fan of Boss digital delays. They're pretty rugged and they sound good. DD-2, DD-3, DD-5, DD-6, PS-3, PS-2, DSD-2, DSD-3 . . . look for any of those used if you want a decent quality delay pedal for not too much money.

Aren't some of the Analog Delays being made rather inexpensively?

I have an old Washburn AD and a Boss DM-2. Both are outstanding.

i can highly recommend ibanez delay pedals. i have an AD9 (the pink analog one). mine doesnt have that long of a delay but it does have a very lush/smooth sound. i wouldnt be surprised if the DE7 was a digital version of mine with more delay time

I like my pair of Rocktron Short Timers - analog sound from a digital delay. I payed less than $60 for both of them together on eBay.

I've got both the Boss DM-2 analog delay and an Ibanez DE-7. The DM-2 is beautiful for short delays (up to 330ms) but they have become quite sought after and therefore expensive. I use the DE-7 for longer delays, set to the "tape echo" mode, and it is particularly 'guitar friendly.' It gives you the option of digital or tape echo modes, has long delay times, and you can lock your settings with the tone lock controls. I think the DE-7 would be the best option.

Behringer have released a similar pedal to the echo park but cheaper so maybe try that or they have also released a memory man clone which should sound awesome (and is alot cheaper then an original)

The best thing to do is go to a music store and play a few. Digital Delays are good, but some of the old Analog delays sound more natural to me. That being said I have 2 DD3's. Its a good delay pedal and can be adjusted to get the effect you explain!

I have a reissue AD9, a DM-3, and a Guyatone MD3. The Guyatone is really nice for longer digital delay stuff, and has a really small footprint.

Thanks for all the replies guys!

The three I'm looking at primarily now are the Ibanez DE7, the Carl Martin Red Repeat, and the Line 6 Echo Park. The only thing I'm worried about is that the Red Repeat won't have a long enough delay for some of the things I'm looking for. But otherwise, those three are perfectly in my price range.

The Ibanez looks like a good all-around little pedal with the basic delay features I need. The Red Repeat looks like a stripped down version of that with a more analog sound to it, but like I said above I'm not sure if it has enough time in the delays. And the Line 6 looks like a stripped down version of the DL4, which I tried awhile ago in a store and thought was very good. It has tap tempo, models digital, analog, and tape delays, and a bunch of different delay settings I could use. Time-wise, it has a little more than the Ibanez. It's also more expensive then the Ibanez, but if all the features on there are good, it would probably be worth the price.

So I'm going to head to a music store to try out these three once I get back from North Carolina, thanks for all the help guys!

I like the DE7. It is really versatile, and the price rocks. Older analog delays from Boss, Ibanez, and Electro-Harmonix are crazy expensive. If I was willing to spend on an old DM-2 or DM-3, I would rather pick up a DD-20, which is what I have.
