Really, the Hardwire? You think so?
I haven't played the Hardwire, or even seen one yet... but listening to the proguitarshop Utoob demo next to others I didn't much like the sound of it. Couldn't put my finger on why... like it was a little too "exact" or something.
The EH #1 echo seems like a nice piece... sounded good. Just a basic no frills delay...
I'm sort of leaning towards the CM Red Repeat myself... and I want to wait & see what the Vox/Satch 'Time Machine' is all about. I heard about that one months ago & its said to be great. Should be available in the next several weeks if the rumors are believed...
The Keely AD9 is a nice box... though a little dark & I need more then 300ms.
Really... I just need to replace my old Ibanez DDL & almost anything would be better! Sounds great... just getting too beat up & noisy.

Had one of those...2secs of delay....Have a DD-2 and a DSD-2 delay as well now

That's not my Ivebeenhad delay... it's a pic from google. Mines been underfoot for at least 15 years and has big chunks of missing paint & other signs of abuse.
You ever try the Pigtronix Echolution? Now THAT's a killer pedal!!!
If I had room on my board for a big box, it would be that... maybe an Delayla or the new Space Echo pedal. Love the old tape Space Echos when they work...

I've only played with the Headrush once... and it was rad.
Sounds great and you can assign the taps to the 5 outputs for mega-swirly delays. Great for soundscape stuff... the guy that owned it said it's NOT his first choice for a "delay" only pedal & also had, I think it was a bog-standard Boss on his board or something fairly generic.
We... or actually he plucked the Headrush off & brought into the control room where it was abused quite a bit. Another delay box I really want... haha Just would be a limited use for me. As a sampler/looper I'd rather have a Boomerang or the Eventide.

I don't know, I love old analog delays, but I like the features of the new digital delays. If only someone would make a pedal that combines all of the things I love the most about digital delays and analog delays into one pedal, I would be sold...
So far everyone who's done it has either charged an arm and a leg, or they're just doing digital simulations of analog delay, none of which IMO capture what a real bucket brigade chip does.

I REALLY like the Line 6 DL4 Delay. Tons of options, and there's also tap tempo built in, plus a 14 second looper! Very versatile delay, my personal favorite.

What do you hear a bucket brigade chip doing that can't be done with digital, at least for delays?
There's a certain krunch, especially when overdriven and the bandwith limited thing where the highs & lows are rolled off in a natural way... thinking of old 12-bit digital delays like AMS & Deltalabs.
I think digital delay certainly sounds WAY better then digital flanges or phasers... none of which ever sound all that "right" to me with a few notable & expensive exceptions which are all rackmount.
Too bad nobody makes a PCM42 in a pedal... but then again, even Lexicon can't build a PCM42 anymore!

It's funny, I have an old Ibanez 8-bit digital that Seymour gave me. It sounds pretty dirty and crappy (in a good way) and I love it. But the dry sound is also lousy. So I have to run it in a parallel fx loop or it kills the tone.
The Bucket Brigades handle transients in a certain way. It's a lot like saying that a JRC4558 chip overdrives in a good way. It's actually NOT good, but its what we like. I haven't found a digital simulation of an analog delay that I've ever liked by anyone. They're all either over-simplified treble rolloffs, or they add some crappy "overdrive" qualities that sound lousy by comparison to the real thing.
But one thing I've also noticed is that I like "dirty" analog delay. In other words, when you have a Maxon or someone employing compander circuitry and pre/de emphasis to the Bucket Brigade to increase it's performance and headroom, it's "too" polished. I like it when the Bucket Brigade overdrives a little from the transients, and when you run a BBD a little on the hot side, the noise floor is better than those old compander circuits anyway.

I hear/feel the transients as part of that overall "crunchiness" in analog & old school designs. Most of the analog emulations are just that, emulations... and I know what you mean there... but not all of 'em are crappy. Just need to get into the expensive stuff... Eventide & the like. I also dig the increased signal to noise of digital delays...

Personally I like having some degree of control over how 'dirty' my delays are. Musically speaking... sometimes an "exact" copy is whats needed. Other times it can lose 6dB or better of top & bottom with 10% harmonic distortion to 'slide in' better...

But im learning.. that JRC4558, isnt that the chip that is so heralded in the orig tube screamer? So, if this is used in a delay, does it cuz a gain clip? Or a diff effect??
until recently, I didnt realize the big use for delays. I thought it was just another gizmo for the board.. (I have a board full of pedals that Ive sworn off using till I get my chops up). But I see now how it is used to thicken up a lead and my have been feeble. So many out there, its hard to choose. lll prob due a new boss. the Carbon copy seems limited, the boss DD7 (?) has an analog setting. I figure till I can learn to use it, then I can go for a "better" one..

The 4558 is an op-amp or IC... found in many devices including home stereos.
What were talking about are old bucket brigade chips like the Panasonic MN3005... and they're basically audio ladders that operate from an external clock. Time based... not gain based... for flanging, phasing, chorus & delay.
Sort of like RAM in a computer...

IF you can add £10 to your budget, you could pick up an Electro harmonix Stereo memory Man With Hazarai. Fantastic delay, plus it does reverb, chorus, flange, reverse, ring mod and other stuff too if you know how to tweak it right. The 30 second looper just about selas the deal on it.
Failing that, the Akai headrush is very good also. I'd have one on my board if it had stereo inputs, but it doesn't so I don't
