Delay pedals...

Re: Delay pedals...

I have the Hardwire delay and also the Reverb. I like both a lot and run them both in the loop. The DL-8 specifically has an analogue setting, a simple looper that actually works and all the delays are really nice. Except I still can find a use for the "reverse" delay but I can find a use for that on any of the delays.

Re: Delay pedals...

The 4558 is an op-amp or IC... found in many devices including home stereos.

What were talking about are old bucket brigade chips like the Panasonic MN3005... and they're basically audio ladders that operate from an external clock. Time based... not gain based... for flanging, phasing, chorus & delay.

Sort of like RAM in a computer...

Thanks for the info !!!

Re: Delay pedals...

Well, I'll probably have a little more money to play with, so I might push for a Line 6 DL-4, although the TC Electronic Nova Delay looks pretty impressive.

What do you guys think of those 2???

I experienced some noisy DL-4 units and it changed the tone a bit. Concerning the Nova Delay...many describe it as a flat, cold or sterile sounding delay. I'm not sure about that one, never tried it.

Is that a particular problem with the DL-4?

Re: Delay pedals...

I've got a Nova and an SMMH on my board. The Nova is the cleanest, clearest, highest quality sounding delay I've ever used in my life. It's what I use for all my standard delay applications. I use the SMMH for reverb, looping, flange and a couple of other cool things.

It's hard to compare theNova and the DL4, to be honest. The DL4 is a lot more versatile because it has all these different pedals modelled, but the sound quality isn't even in the same league as the Nova. Plus the Nova has 9 spaces to store your presets against the DL4's 3, which is massively useful.

But that's not to say I don't like the DL4, as it too has a couple of cool features up it's sleeve. It has an excellent looper and the option to control any or all parameters with an expression pedal is a major plus point, although a noticable volume drop and very well documented poor reliability aren't.

Your best bet is to get out there and play a load of them. One will jump out as being more 'for you' than the rest.

FWIW if I could only have 1 delay on my board it would be the Nova.

Re: Delay pedals...

Carl Martin - Red Repeat is what I currently use. However - It is a battery killer, so make sure you have a supply of batteries and disconnect it when not in use.

I just purchased another pedal AD 990 Pro (But that is out of the price range you mentioned), which has a fantastic tone and range. Still getting use to it.

Re: Delay pedals...

The MXR Carbon Copy is a great little pedal, the AnalogMan delays are also quite good but are hard to get at the moment past that the classic Deluxe Memory Man is a classic for a reason.

My fav delay pedal is the on/off pedal that goes with my Echoplex!

What digital pedal doesn't eat batteries like jelly beans?! Only way to use those is with a power supply... or feed them 9 volts every few hours.

Do you like the tone & range of the Red Repeat?

The DL4 is probably the best pedal that Lame6 makes, though... that isn't really saying much. It sounds ok, and does a lot especially given the price... but I think that the "model" aspect is overrated. Tape echo; tube echo; analog echo... come on, how many do you really need?! After a certain point delay is delay is delay.

I wouldn't stick one on my board though, they aren't well made & really, if I had space for something that big it would be a Pigtronix Echolution or CM Delayla... the former being a seriously badass box.

I haven't tried the Nova... but all the TC stuff I've used has been very clean & top notch.

Re: Delay pedals...

The Echolution looks a very impressive pedal. Not sure how easy it would be to get here, and how much it costs.

Re: Delay pedals...

Don't know if you can stretch to the price, cos I think it's the same as the Echolution (at least over here it is) but the Empress Superdelay looks AMAZING. One issue to me is it's only mono in and mono out, which at that price is a bit ****... but otherwise, it looks fabulous.

Re: Delay pedals...

I'm toying with either getting a compressor as well, or maybe a pedalboard to put it all on!!! :D

Stevie, I got the Deeelay AND the Signa Comp for about £150 from CMATMODS... I WAS thinking about a Retro-sonic Delay and another Keeley Comp... which would have been closer to £350!! Check them out.

Yeah, I'm thinking along those lines, or maybe the CM Red Repeat and Opto-Comp!! :D

Re: Delay pedals...

Beyond the stated budget but the Eventide Timefactor looks like a nice delay pedal. It also has modulation capabilities among other things.
