Demon : the last frontier !

I use 3 Screaming Demon with alnico 8 magnet to start , and have played with pole pieces .
First I replaced the allen heads with duncan slotted heads shortened to the lenght of allens , and then today I replaced the short slotted with
golden Gibson slotted shortened as well :
much much better from grainy with duncans to fat and rich with Gibsons !

Fat heads Gibson pole pieces are definatly BETTER !

And it is the last tweek with Demons : PERFECT .

Awesome that it worked out!

A/B samples would be nice..same settings on the amp and the pup makes the change then.

How many tweaks did you do until you were satisfied with the pup?

Re: Demon : the last frontier !

A lot of mods :
* first did the alnico 8 mag for more low mids and power
* then wanted to change the quality of the attack , too thin with allens , better with short slotted and even better with Gibsons .

I don't know if it explain the change in sound but Gibson screws have a much higher pull when you stick some metal piece on it .
THEY DRIVE !

Well , nothing is perfect in this world , some could put the Demon in a Lespaul and job done , but I wanted in my guitars ( ibanez roadstars , thick basswood ) the clarity and punch of the Demon without the usual grips ; thin , treebly .
I have it now .
And tweeking pickup is good fun , for example I done some
"Air-Jazz-8-neck" , very nice .

Care to shed some light on that air-jazz-8 humbucker? I love ideas like this.

I'm just razzin' ya a little bit bro! ;)

I quite like to hear about your experiments with the Demon. I have one I bought used. It has been sitting around forever; I'm waiting to find the right guitar for it.

Well first put an alnico 8 in the Jazz , and remove the metal spacer in witch the screws are ... screwed , then you will have to put two pieces of wood under this screw coil ( under each end of the coil ) to stop it to bend when to are tightening the base plate .

Then the magnet is only touching the stud coil and there is an air gap between the screws and the magnet .

Result is such a funny pickup , more mids and punch , with some quack due to the air gap , insane clarity , it picks note even faster than the Jazz , with a better defined tone ;
with the jazz you have this sort of vintage sound with big basses mixed with a lot of highs and scooped mids ,
with the air-Jazz-8 the note is big and punchy , rounder but it would be too thick without the air gap .

Re: Demon : the last frontier !

How would one of those demons sound in the neck?

I have a stock Demon in the neck of my MIK Hamer Standard with a DD at the bridge. Demon in the neck sounds like a big bright PAF. Does not darken up much as you turn the volume pot down. And it has enough output to keep up with the DD at the bridge.

So maybe a Demon 8 with different pole pieces wouldn't be too dark then, since you say the stock demon is still pretty bright in the neck.

Re: Demon : the last frontier !

1/2 air demon

Half air Demon is not recomanded in the bridge ,
but for those who put Demon in neck it could be better cause in the neck it's a bit thick and woofy in the bass , a bit colourless , an air mod would bring some sophistication to it .

A Demon with alnico 8 in the neck would a disaster !
Alnico 8 brings more power and low mids , things that you want to avoid for a neck pickup .

Not only that, there'd be a lot of string-pull with A8 in the neck position which would give you "Strat-itis" and loss of sustain.

Re: Demon : the last frontier !

I have some small ceramic magnets out of a BC rich pickup. What would be the tonal difference if I threw it under the neck side or bridge side coil of the demon? I was thinking about maybe doing that and an A8 magnet or just an A8 magnet for the heck of it.
