Dennis Dunaway Frog Tribute SG/EB-3

My buddy that is playing bass for me now had a sad sack SG bass that he wanted to doll up and pay tribute to one of his all time faves, Dennis Dunaway and his legendary Frog bass.

I was so totally down!

This started life as a brown 2012 Gibson SG Faded, about as plain ugly as could be. It wasn't setup to play very well and had a rough-ish rout to replace the bridge TB mini humbucker with a Bartolini bass soapbar (huge improvement fwiw, neck pickup is next).

Stripped it down to bare wood then SEM white basecoat, Little Daddy Roth silver base then silver flake finished off with 2 coats SprayMax 2k Clear. Also flaked the Bart in the bridge to fit the theme.

Cleaned up the fret ends, did re-crown and polish, fixed up the slots in the brass nut that was added somewhere along the line then dyed the roasted maple board and sealed it

Then came the mirrors and rhinestones, psychedelic Glam Rock ala early Coop and totally in tribute to the awesome DD. What a blast to put together!

Very cool. Witch hats would put it into the era. What did you do with the headstock?

I wanted to but it wasn't my choice on the knobs.

I buffed the headstock out a bit, flaked the truss rod cover ala the Bartolini and dropped a mirror on it.

…neck pickup is next).

Have you taken the cover off the neck pickup?

All the newer Gibson mudbuckers I’ve seen are fake. The were humbuckers with steel blades with an aluminum thing in the middle with fake pole pieces. And the blades were upside down, so the didn’t extend up to the cover. I don’t know why they did that. And the aluminum thing will suck some tone because of eddy current loses.

If you want the real grunty mudbucker tone you can get an Artec pickup for like $30. It’s wound like the real thing.

I had an Epiphone EB-0 come into my shop. The neck pickup on those is a real sidewinder/mudbucker, but they wound it with heavy gauge wire.. like 30 gauge. It makes the pickup low impedance and gives it a weird blurry tone. Especially into a high z amp.

I rewound that for the client with 42 AWG wire to around 14k. Made it sound great.

I’m a big Dunaway fan.

It is the newer style wind and yeah they're pigs, the Artec is good?, I will definitely get one and give it a shot, thanks for the tip!

He has an Epi version too but I haven't got my hands on it yet, I'll check that out.

DD rules!

Josh Gravelin make awesome pickups to spec and he is a bass player. Feel weird promoting another guy on Seymour’s place so let me know if you need more info. Hamer Fan Club approved. :7:
