Derek Trucks Pyle Driver speakers..

Phantasmagoria

watch where you point that sabre
Well, I just came across these and read that Derek Trucks uses 10"
Pyle Driver's in his cabs (MH1020's)

....and that would be this speaker:

Does anyone know what this one below is then....it's a 10" Pyle Driver and looks similar to the one above ....but the shape at the back/magnet/label looks different...

Is that ^ the heavier "MH1040" 100 watt (with a 40 oz magnet) model?

Has anyone had any experience with one? If so, what are they like?

I had a cab with a set of 12s, really dug em. In a warm sounding cab/amp they sound great, in a bright cab they are too spiked on the top for my like. Good ol American hard rock was the tone, solid bottom and plenty of clarity.

Re: Derek Trucks Pyle Driver speakers..

I always thought the Emi Swamp Thang was the Pyle sound, perfected. They share a lot of the same characteristics, but the Swamp Thang is more open sounding and versatile.

Re: Derek Trucks Pyle Driver speakers..

Thanks for the insight guys. There is'nt much out there about them. Came across a few on the bay a while ago and I've been wondering about them since..

They sound like they'll be a decent upgrade for the stock Emi's (pretty tinny) in a 2x10 cab I have lying around...

Re: Derek Trucks Pyle Driver speakers..

Not familiar with the speakers from the OP, but I do like Pyles, if my memory serves me correctly.

I did see some Pyles in a recent Parts Express catalog, but they were not guitar speakers.

I think that they will be a nice upgrade, based on my past experience. I'm interested in hearing your thoughts once you do that.

Re: Derek Trucks Pyle Driver speakers..

Unfortunately, after getting in touch with the seller, it turns out they're 2ohm speakers (!?).

I guess I'll have to find something else for my cab instead. I do have a 4 ohm output on my amp so I could probably wire them in series but I'm not sure about that. I've always used 8-16 ohm speakers and I guess these would be rough on the amp or lack dynamics or something?

I mean there are'nt many 2-4 ohm guitar speakers or amps out there and I guess there's a reason for that? Too bad, since they're cheap, NOS ...and I really would've liked to check them out.. :(

Re: Derek Trucks Pyle Driver speakers..

I wouldnt go ape**** over those speaks. I have a couple. Its a very specifiic sound that Trucks used/uses for Slide with an old Super Reverb Amp
The ones he uses are the 20 watters I believe, and may break up more/earlier than the 40 watters that Pyle also made that I have.. .
Eminence did actually make a copy of the 'Trucks Pyles', but I don't know if they could be special ordered.
In my estimation, they dont have tons of character on their own , so I think Trucks may like the Amp to get most of his sound. Just a wild guess, I'm not great with this stuff. They are bright, pretty articulate and sensitive, they retain some Hi-Fi'ish cleans, but like I said, the 20 watters may break up better and sound more organic than the 40 watters that I have. They are not real punchy compared to an Alnico Jensen.
The second speaker that you showed is NOT one of the "Trucks" style Pyles, but the first one is.

Yeah...I realised that ....think I'll just look for something else instead. That 2 ohm rating is a bit unnerving as well..lol.
