Derek Trucks question

Just saw Derek on the "Songlines" DVD. I know he doesn't hardly use any effects, any idea on what amp he uses? I couldn't get a good look at it on the DVD. By the way, awesome DVD, what a player and what a band.

Sincerely,

Re: Derek Trucks question

blackface super reverbs 90% of the time. with the allmans he uses a super six which is basically a twin reverb pushing six 10" speakers. gibson sg tuned to open E into a super turned up pretty loud. last time i was close enough to see the settings the volume and treble were set really high and the bass and mids were almost off

i totally agree, hes an amazing player and has a great band. he and todd the bass player have been playing together since derek was 14

Re: Derek Trucks question

I saw him with eric clapton about 6 months ago and IIRC he was using super reverbs although i also saw some marshall half stacks up there, as well a tweed bassman and eric's tweed twins. It was kind of hard to tell who was using what amp since there were three guitarists.

Like Jeremy said, the Super Reverb is Derek's mainstay. I've seen him close up at the Boulder Theatre and that's what he was using. Like all of us, he probably plays through other things, but it's the Super Reverb you'll see him using most often.

Doyal Brammell use the Marshal and the Bassman. I've seen Derek with the Allmans and his own band and he is always playing thru a BF Super Reverb. In larger venues he may use the bigger Fender, but I saw him at the Beacon which is a smaller theatre and it was the SR.

Re: Derek Trucks question

Yep, he always has his two supers with him and with the allman brothers he uses the super sixes, everytime. I read an interview with him a while back and he pretty much said thsoe are the ONLY amps he uses.

Re: Derek Trucks question

The kid could play through any old tube amp and sound good. He's that class of player.

He's my favourite young player around. Amazing feel and tone.

You know what it is? He's imaginative. He doesn't just play licks...he plays melodic ideas. Lew

Re: Derek Trucks question

Well, Derek does have his fair share of influences...similar to mine, so thats probably why I like him.

What I meant is that he's like Robben Ford, Larry Carlton and the like.....a bit like a Samurai and his sword, these guys blend together with their guitars and they push and pull those strings like they were an extension of their voice and body.

Re: Derek Trucks question

yeah as has already been established, BF super reverbs. he doesnt use any fx, just plugs straight into the amp. i think it was on songlines that he used a few effects very sparingly...but only because the producer of the album bullied him into checking them out, lol.

Re: Derek Trucks question

He has 2 main Super Reverbs, one a 66 and I believe the other a 65. One has these pyle driver speakers made for car audio in them, they break up earlier and sound awesome in the amp, and the other amp has webers. The amps have been modified for high treble.

The Pyle drivers Derek uses have nothing to do with car stereo speakers...that is internet mumbo jumbo...

I do not know for sure based on Derek's stuff, but given what I know about car audio speakers, I do not think they would hold up in a guitar amp, especially in a touring musician's rig.

Re: Derek Trucks question

Yah, just the supers & super six's like everyone's said... he's never used a Marshall live (I don't think) and the Randalls are loooooooooong retired!

I've mixed monitors for the DTB a few times since 2003/4... worked local crew for Allman's shows a handful too... mixing clear channel instant live CD's... Lord Valve does some work on his amps... might be able to shed some light on mods but I'm pretty sure his tech said they're bone stock. Just replace whatever wears out or blows up as it blows up...

Derek's got no magik pixie dust, plugs straight into the amp. Even unplugs from the amp to plug into a tuner... Boss TU12 I think.

Just a healthy dose of amp 'verb.

Frightening.

Monster player!

Helluva nice guy too. Really down to Earth & peaceful.

Re: Derek Trucks question

this is the type of playing I am thinking of: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F91WDdcARQ0

Man, this one makes shivers go down my spine.

Is it just me? Or is there some kind of sync or SMPTE problem with this video.
Cuz' He is pulling notes outta the fretboard where they just ain't, And getting volume swells B4 he touches his knob. Watch the drummer...He is off to. It seems the Video is a whole bar off from the audio.:eyecrazy:

There's a lot of those music clips in youtube where this problem seems prominent.. Unfortunately. Just a latency glitch, I'd guess.

Thanks for sharing, by the way. Great clip.

Re: Derek Trucks question

I saw him with the ABB two days ago. I saw warren's rig, which i could spot a mile away, and i saw derek's fender. But the weird thing is, there were 2 other soldano amps onstage aside from warren's, and i doubt warren was playing thru 3 soldano half stacks. I also didnt see a marshall onstage so i think he may have dropped it from his touring rig, cuz im pretty sure he doesnt use them in his other bands.

this led me to believe derek was playing thru one.
