Push the string towards the bridge while fretting a note. I can usually get about 1/4 step or so. :cool3:

Hey, thats perty cool.
I think I have a pretty nice vibrato, I have never "practiced" it, but i've definetely developed it over time. I couldn't tell you what I do, I've never really examined it, it differentiates alot constantly though.

Re: Describe your vibrato style!

I've been practicing my rock vibrato for a while now.. it's better than what it was but I'm still no Friedman/Yngwie/Gilbert!

Re: Describe your vibrato style!

I try to avoid permantend vibrato like many (also great) players do. I'm geared to good singers or classical strings and hate that permanent vibrato to many of the classical musicians (especially singers) too - very unexpressive.

I mainly use vibrato on long notes - let it ring w/o vibrato and slowly fade in the vibrato at the end - like Marilyn Monroe.
Sometimes I also use a wide and fast one to separate notes from each other, e.g. play the same note 3 times, but only the 2nd or 3rd one gets the vibrato.

I use both horizontal and vertical vibrato. Horizontal is great smooth for up- and down bends.

I would say besides my poor technique my vibrato is one of the few highlights in my playing I'm proud of.

Cheers, Chris

Re: Describe your vibrato style!

My vibrato's got probably three levels, there's a subtle shimmery one, then there's another level, a little more bendy, think My Bloody Valentine (My Bloody Vibrato?), and then there's the "improper" way (wrist convulsions) for sweet freakouts.

I would best describe mine as inconsistant and awful. The kind of sounds that send cats running for cover!

:laugh2:

Ah...mine's the same way. I try to vibrato notes but they just sound bad, so I usually play unvibratoed notes...which makes my playing a little bland, but eh, I'm working on it! I'm better at vibrating (?) a bent note or just after a note bend I do a wiggly one...wide, I think is what you call it. Yeah, in any case, I'm not too good at it either.

Re: Describe your vibrato style!

Seems like when I'm really concentrating on getting something right I drop the vibrato. I usually don't even think about it. Mine is fairly slow and wide I guess, and I do it exactly the way I used to when I played upright bass.
