Details on Blacktop Strat stock pick-ups?

After putting in lots of SD and Dimarzio low output humbuckers in mt two Blacktop Strats, I put the stock pick-ups back. I sang the praises of low output buckers before, but these are, I think, both around 13K each and they have the MJAFAMEAC! (Mo Jo As Far As My Ears Are Concerned). I searched hundres of posts on different forums (no exxageration) and one (1!) person said they were SD JBs. I doubt it, but perhaps they were fashioned after JBs. The bottom plate is gold colored. Embossed an the plate is an "R" on the bridge pick-up (for rear!) and an "F" on the neck (for front?). There is also a weird insignia that looks like the letters BH (Humbucker-Bumhucker? :) ). There are two stickers on the plate. One says RoHS compliant (“Reduction of Hazardous Substances”) and the other says either "BRIDGE pick ups BHK, or "NECK pick ups BHK" on them. They have ballsy mids, a hair of treble articulation on top, and a rolled back tight bass. Very much like SD JBs. FOR ME, they are perfect. BUT- I want to put in some Duncans or Dimarzios in one of them that mimic the stock pick-ups in the other. Then I could really a/b the stock pick-ups with a known quantity. Looking at the Dimarzio specs it seems like a Norton might be the closest, by the DC resistance (12.62), millivolts (352) and Treb/Mid/Bass eq (5.0- 7.0- 6.5).
I play mostly clean through a Bassman or Twin amp mod. I want a very pick sensitive pick-up, AND it has to be pretty high powered, because position 2 and 4 are coil split (one is the two outside coils of each 'bucker, the other is the two inside coils). I want the coil split sound to be as muscular as possible. I don't need glass on the upper end because I don't use much pedals or processing. What think yooz guyz (and girlz).

I heard them demoed on Pro Guitar Shop, and I liked what I heard, except that classic Strat neck tone. It just wasn't completely there, but I did like the other variations of tones it produced. I plan on getting one in black, and making a few cosmetic changes as well as some hard ware up grades. The stock PU will stay in for a while, but I do have a few replacement ideas brewing around.

I have been amazed by these pickups as well. The $300 Dean Custom 350f has them. I moved the Bridge pickup to an S540 and it is perfect in that guitar. I put the Evolution in this guitar. The neck pickup is very PAF, sounds great but I'm looking for something tigher, so installing a PAF Pro.

Didn't know these pickups were also used in blacktop strats. Suspected they might be a JB copy.

I've been playing a Blacktop for about 4 years now, and I really like it. PU's are pretty decent. A Pearly Gates are SH5 Custom might be a pretty good alternative in the bridge depending on your style. I think the neck pu sounds pretty good especially with clean tones. But that's just my take. I haven't tried one with other pickups so I really can't say.

anyone have any recommendations for a replacement pickup for a blacktop that will not so much change the tone but clarify the tone a bit more, especially when playing clean. the stock pickups sound fine through my Boss ME70 pedal when distorted but clean the guitar is a bit muddy. but I can't expect too much from an under $500 guitar. my plan is a strat with humbucker tone

Re: Details on Blacktop Strat stock pick-ups?

I am about to install a Gibson Classic '57 and Classic Plus '57(black bobbins, no covers) in my Blacktop Tele. The tone from the stock BHK pups is pretty good, but I play a clean style and have noticed that I get more clarity from the Gibson '57s that I had until I recently sold the Les Paul that had them in it. I'm not expecting the '57s to sound the same in my Blacktop Tele as they sounded in my Les Paul (I wish!), but I'm hoping the tone and clarity is an improvement over the (not bad) BHK humbuckers. I just wanted a classic sounding hum bucker guitar with the feel and ergonomics of a Fender. This may be a bit of a waste of money, but hopefully the outcome will be pleasing.

The BHKs resistance are 12.4k and 12.8k. The Gibson Classic/Classic Plus '57s are about 7.7k and 8.1k, so definitely less output and, hopefully, more clarity and richer tone.

I'm very curious to find out how this swap goes, please post back with your throughts.

I pulled the original pickups in my blacktop telecaster. They sounded pretty muddy to me and didn't clean up very well. Am I missing something?

Re: Details on Blacktop Strat stock pick-ups?

Since you mentioned liking the distorted tones but not the clean tones, you could try changing just the neck pickup to a Jazz model or some other low output humbucker. That will give you a nice clean tone on the neck pickup, and allow you to keep your distorted tones you really like with the stock bridge pickup.
