Details on the Duncan '59+?

I have a guitar with what the factory calls a '59+ in the neck position (guitar is a Gibson Les Paul 7 String). Does anyone know the details on this pickup?

It's a bit hotter than I'd like, and I'm trying to figure out if I could go with just the regular '59 to tame it down or if I should look at something different altogether. I already have it backed pretty far from the strings.

The bridge pickup is a JB7 which seems ok but maybe mushy. I think I prefer the Custom in my Charvel, but I'm not sure I want both guitars to sound the same. Meh.

Re: Details on the Duncan '59+?

Try putting a UOA5 magnet in the neck and a regular thickness ceramic in the bridge.
I have Duncan Designed in my 7 string, and putting the regular ceramic in the bridge really tightened it up while giving a nice sizzle to the top. Haven't tried the UOA5 in the neck yet, though I wired mine to a push/pull for series/parallel, which sounds great. Heard of someone else who recently put one in a 6 string Jazz neck and found an improvement.

Thanks. Good idea to try a ceramic, but wouldn't that make it kinda like the Distortion? I like that pickup for metal (a lot), but maybe not for this guitar.

Maybe I'll swap the neck magnet too, though Id probably try AII.

Yes, but correct me if I'm wrong, a JB with a regular ceramic is know as either a JB+ or a 'Dokkenbucker'.

I'm curious as to what exactly the 59'+ is.. Maybe just a '59 bridge? something special Duncan made for Gibson...?

Yeah, that's the JB+. I put in a regular ceramic recently and it considerably tightened up the JB. The UOA5 did the same to the Jazz.

The Dokkenbucker is an "unwound" Duncan Distortion.

Oh, okay on the 'Dokkenbucker'. I thought it was just another way of referring to the JB+.

Re: Details on the Duncan '59+?

You could try wiring the 59+ in parallel (or with a switch as Demanic suggested). This will reduce output perceived significantly, tighten up the sound, reduce boominess.

Re: Details on the Duncan '59+?

Thanks! It's not that the '59+ sounds boomy to me. It actually sounds brighter and tighter and higher output than what I was expecting/wanted. I kinda wonder if the "+" is a ceramic magnet in there. I still need to ask Duncan and/or just crack open the pickup and see if I can tell if the mag is ceramic.

EDIT: Duncan says there's no such thing as the '59+, so it just just be a '59 and Gibson's product literature have a typo or something. Guess I'll try an A2 mag first, then maybe off to find a warmer but lower output neck pickup.
