Determining bridge size

I'm building a guitar for the first time, and obviously, I'll need a bridge. When I went to find a bridge, however, I noticed that there are several different sizes. How do I know what size I need? Thanks.

That's a very vague question you have there.

When you say build do you mean a kit or a guitar made from random parts?

If You're building from scratch you can put any bridge you want on it.

Re: Determining bridge size

Sorry, didn't realize it was vague. I am building from scratch, and since I'm new to this, I assumed bridge size had something to do with nut width, or some other

The term you need to use is spacing my friend. The bridge and nut spacing.

With bridges you have two main types Import and usa spaced. The nut can be whatever as long as you don't run into any issues like strings going off the fretboard.

If you want my 24cents worth i would reccomend getting some routing templates and using those to make your body. All the hard measurements and holespacing will be done that way.

i have some here that i am yet to use. obviously its a strat template set

I am a fairly ambitious person by nature, so in my infinite logic, I went with the shape of an Esp f-50. It's a little complex for a first time, but it's going pretty well.

Thats not an unrealistic goal. Has it started? Pictures?

Re: Determining bridge size

What Kramersteen said although I will add are you wanting a tremolo or set bridge? If you don't want a tremolo then don't dig out the back for the springs and claw ;)

I'm building a set bridge, but I knew I didn't need to make the cavity. I figured that for a first build I'd want to make it simpler.

It has started, and I actually "finished" the body (it got to where I had the shape down and just needed to do the sanding to get the edges right), but I've decided to start over after I got unhappy with how I'd messed up.(I learned what happens if you have a pattern bit without support on both sides of the router) I have the other hardware and electronics, and I might be able to post my first attempt later.

I currently own only tremolo equipped guitars but my next Warmoth project will be a Tele–miss having a set bridge guitar.

Best of luck on your build! If you can, please keep us posted with pics too!

Thanks! I'll try to remember to put some pictures up later.
