Did another today. "petite Fleur" by Sydney Bechet

Chickenwings

Alnico 6/8
Strat with ssl-1's on rhythm, 335 with Pearlies on lead. Both going thru a lovepedal tweed twin pedal into a 1969 fender twin.

I really like the chord progression and lead lines in this one - has a really cool groove to it (kind of a jazzy rhumba thing for lack of any good words :0)) . What is main chord progression that you use?

I just use the chords from the original tune. It was a big hit for Sydney Bechet in the 1950's. Its in real book number 2. Its mostly in Gm. I think a jazzy rhumba thing is a perfect way to describe it. Thank you for listening and enjoying.

Sweet - thanks.....I was a bit lazy with the old google search button and my jazz knowledge is sadly lacking (though I am trying to make amends in that regard). I listened to the song a few times and it just struck me as different in a really good way. For me, I grew up in the whole hair flare thing in the 80s so I really enjoy, now, taking in as much diverse music as I can.

You've got some feel man! I love your use of what I assume is the "vibrato" on the twin :) I feel you've dialed it in perfectly for the tune. Do you have originals like this?

Re: Did another today. "petite Fleur" by Sydney Bechet

yeh i have originals. I put one up the day before this one, but noone listened to it! lol
Im always writing stuff or arranging stuff. Its the interpretation of melodies and improvisation around the harmonic structure that i like best so its no big deal whether the tune is original or not for me.

Next week i'm playing at a burlesque show. I'll be playing "petite fleur" while this girl does a strip:

Great work man ! I have that exact sheet of music too . In fact it's in a collection of over 3400 songs I got with it in this collection , it is in a two volume set and both are super heavy and super dooper .

When I got this collection it was as a gift from a really great Finnish drummer ( [Matti Oiling ] : http://www.blueswebzine.com/news/0011.html ) for services rendered during a tour I did with him and his band from Finland . It was all standards and I did them with the humble 10 hole blues harp and a Marshall 60 watt tube combo ( 12"X2 ) and a Shure Brothers 520D Green Bullet mic. Oh - - - and I did get paid too :)

My friend The Late Matti Oiling RIP :

Man, that was really sweet .... great job on the drum track as well. That Strat sound you dialed in was perfect for your arrangement!

guitar was a 335 via a lovepedal tweed twin pedal into a very old twin reverb with texas heats.
the rhythm gtr was a strat thru the same pedal and same amp (vibrato engaged).
The mic was an akg d22 just close miced near the edge.
the bass was my partsocaster jazz bass with flatwounds and bartolinis direct via a sansamp bddi.
the drums were generated via a program called "band in a box". Its an easy and useful tool for knocking together song ideas quickly. Its also excellent for writing charts.

Im really glad you liked it. Thank you for your kind words.
I used to play for a harpist called "Big Blind ray" and introduced him to this song too. He loves playing it. Its a beautiful tune on the harp fo sho.
Im performing this tune with a sax player and an extraordinarily beautiful burlesque dancer this thursday....that will be fun.

gibson175 :

Looked this one many times and wondered :naughty: if I could rip it on a harp , I guess I am after this one now too .

So you did this in Gm huh - - Time for a [ C ] harp to kick it with a " cross harp " attack , thanks for the info , much appreciated man .

here is ray doing it with a house band in Tamworth. the tune starts at 8:50. He makes a lot of slips but i think thats cos harps are not chromatic so its not easy to get all the notes. I think a Bb major harp will get you pretty close cos G is the relative minor of Bb and there is a section where the song changes from Gm to Bbmaj but you will have to bend the f up to f# when you go back to the Gm sections. I dont know what harp ray used.

Man this guy has a really great tone going , lots of really great blue noting . Thanks his vibrato is cool and strong . He's been at it a while I can see . When you have been at it a while you can " feel " those half note steps and in time you begin to make a diatonic [ REACH ] and get them . There's a bit of sorting out the best key'd harp for this to happen . Some songs adapt easily into that in the [ Cross Harp ] or as technically termed " 2nd. " position . There several positions for the humble 10 holed diatonic to achieve chromatic results , " Lee Oskar " is one of those guys like myself who does this . The cross harp position is my domain , I love it . Your buddy Ray kicks serious @$$ my respect goes out to him , when you do it right it's like magic .
