Did EVH really steal Soldano circuitry for the 5150?

Re: Did EVH really steal Soldano circuitry for the 5150?

The Mesa rectifier is a Soldano ripoff by the way.
And the 5150 is also one, but it has an extra gainstage and some other small variations...
Basicly they are all from the same amp from way back;)

Re: Did EVH really steal Soldano circuitry for the 5150?

If I remember correctly, the Preamp circut of the 5150 is the same as the basic preamp design of the Soldano SLO100.

But.. all these circuts come down to 1 basic circut, which I believe would be the JCM800. All is done after that is basicly loads of "modding", hot rodding, etc.. and you have a new amp.

There're 3 basic designs of amps:
Fender
Marshall
Mesa

All is done after that is the preamp circut of those amps is changed around and walla, you have a new amp.

So a 5150 is similar to a SLO 100?

Thats the patch I use most on Guitar Port and on my Flextone for my gainy sounds... Worth a look?

Re: Did EVH really steal Soldano circuitry for the 5150?

Other than the aforementioned preamp designs, I doubt they are anywhere near similar, especially coming out of a speaker.

Re: Did EVH really steal Soldano circuitry for the 5150?

Amps are not that different in basic designs....
They are simple tube amplifiers...no rocket science is involved, very few guitar amps are truly radical different from other amps.

Re: Did EVH really steal Soldano circuitry for the 5150?

True, but small tweaks here and there can collectively make drastic tonal changes.

Re: Did EVH really steal Soldano circuitry for the 5150?

Good point, touche :). That's where you get into mod territory haha.

Re: Did EVH really steal Soldano circuitry for the 5150?

Ooo, I think you guys are way off. The 5150 sounds NOTHING like a SLO or really any Soldano. The lead channel of a SLO doesn't even touch the first gain stage of the 5150, which is not necessarily a good or bad thing I guess. The Soldano amps have alot tighter grain to the distortion and more definition and punch in the high end. A 5150 is really loose on the bottom and very wide-grained in its gain, more like a boogie (yuck).

If you want ot hear VH use a soldano, check out the studio bootleg version of "Won't get fooled again" which he used a SLO and some of the stuff on For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge like Poundcake, Jugement Day and The Dream is over were all done on the SLO.

Re: Did EVH really steal Soldano circuitry for the 5150?

Soldano created a preamp design that included a cathode follower when he was modding Marshalls back in the 80's. This circuit evolved into the Soldano SLO. Peavey copied this design for the 5150s, Mesa copied it for the Rectifier, and Marshall copied it with the JCM2000s. So far as I know, just about every other high gain amp (Bogner, Framus, ENGL, ect) has copied the same circuit.

I don't know that but, for example, Mesa does have circuitry designs that are... well... originally Soldano, Marshall etc.

Mesa's good designs (marks, nomads, f's) are based Originally on Fender princetons...

I think that was only the MkI's. The clean channel of the Nomads, Fs, and Rectifiers were based of the black face Fender Twin circuit, the gain channel of the Fs and Rectos is based off the Soldano design. I'm not sure what kind of circuit the Nomads gain channel is based off.

I think the MkII thru MkIV were based off the Black Face as well, but I'm not sure.

(I could be wrong about some of those, but I'm pretty sure those are correct)

Re: Did EVH really steal Soldano circuitry for the 5150?

So would it be safe to assume that the common ancestor of all guitar amps is Fender?

Fender--->Marshall/Mesa--->Marshall JCM800--->Soldano--->Modern Marshall/Mesa/5150/every friggin' high-gain amp
