Did I install my pickup backwards??

I had to "settle" and get a dimarzio instead of going with SD for my seven string, and got an Evolution-7. I got in installed and it seems a little sludgy on the palm mutes and single notes sound a little fatter than they should. I noticed there arent any signs of which coil is which, i just figured the writing should be pointing towards the neck, or is that backwards? If I had it right I may be ditching this pickup soon.

Re: Did I install my pickup backwards??

I always make sure the wire from the pickup exits closest to the controls.

Not sure if that's correct. Your discription of the DMZ's tone sounds accurate to me.

Re: Did I install my pickup backwards??

if the guitar is sitting on its strap button and the neck is pointing to the sky, you should be able to read the logo

Thats how it is.. did i fubar the wiring? I soldered the black and white together, and used the red as hot.. correct?

Re: Did I install my pickup backwards??

Errrr, I dunno if 7 strings use something special (I dont think so), but usually, from my experience with pickups both DiMarzio, Duncan and what not, its Green and Bare should be grounded, black is hot, red and white are either taped together or soldered and taped together. Check the wiring diagram for descriptions, if it says black is the ''hot'' thats how it should be as far as I know.

Red and white are usually only used for coil splitting I think

Black and white are soldered together. Red is hot, green and bare go to ground.

Re: Did I install my pickup backwards??

D'oh, sorry. Been ages since I installed my ToneZone (and got rid of it 2 months after >_>)

EDIT: Is the pickup sound lower on output than what it should be? If not, I think you've done what you should do, maybe you just dont like the pickups sound? >_> Or maybe there out of phase somehow? I'm just guessing here.

Did you wire it to the pots like the old pickup? How close is the pickup to the strings?

Re: Did I install my pickup backwards??

Well, with the sustainer system is actually way easier, the old pickup was attached to a quick connect that plugs into the board, and all the electronics plug in through the board, including the switch. Only downside is that there are only 2 leads, so that means no coil tapping, but i dont care about that.

Re: Did I install my pickup backwards??

Well, try flipping it, and if you like the sound better, keep it that way. It matters more that you like the sound than whether or not the pickup is upside-down
