Just curious...cos i just discovered the existance of the ts808 and its supposed to be rockin, while before i thought the ts9 was the only tube screamer.

Re: Did SRV use a ts9 or a ts808?

I was always under the impression he predominately used the TS808, but I could be wrong.

Re: Did SRV use a ts9 or a ts808?

all the pics I've seen are ts9's. he usually used two at the same time. one for volume boost and the other for drive.

Re: Did SRV use a ts9 or a ts808?

but that guy was a total tone guru. he had dozens of amps and pedals and switched them around daily.

Re: Did SRV use a ts9 or a ts808?

He used the 808, 9, and 10, pretty much in the order that they came out. He spent the most amount of time with a TS9. The TS10 was the last one on his pedalboard before he died.

He mainly used those pedals for a clean boost. I am sure that he would have loved a Duncan pickup booster.. seriously :D

Re: Did SRV use a ts9 or a ts808?

The TS-9 and TS-808 tonality were almost as big a part of SRV's lead tone as his Strat! You can hear him click on the Tubescreamer for many, if not most, of his more rock oriented solos. I think SRV singlehandedly brought back interest in the the TS-9 and the TS-808. They'd pretty much lost thier appeal until people found out SRV used them. Now everybody seems to have at least one! I have two TS-9's modded by John and one unmodded TS-808. The modded TS-9's are much nicer sounding than the unmodded TS-808 reissue! Just look for a used TS-9 and then send it to John for tweaking. Don't bother with the $170 TS-808. Lew

Re: Did SRV use a ts9 or a ts808?

I associate Stevie with the TS9.

you know, Cesar Diaz had the technical know how, but he commented that Stevie had great ears, and said and did a lot of things tone wise, that proved true technically

I like the TSs because they sound and FEEL organic, an integral part of the sound, whether used as a clean boost, or a solo boost with more gain and midrange

Here is SRV's rig from 1984:

cant really read those but its not hard to figure out what they are (vox, pair of ts808, univibe) the tubescreamers and boss sd1 are very similar in design and both are great pedals.
they arent transparent by any means but they sound great

Re: Did SRV use a ts9 or a ts808?

I thought I read once that he also used an extra wah taped stationary at a certain resonant frequency

Jeremy, I've always felt the stock TS-9 sound was a little to compressed and lacked that transparent quality too. That's exactly what I asked STRATDELUXER97 to remedy when I sent him my two MIJ TS-9's to mod. He did a great job and tuned each of them a little differantly...one is slightly clearer and more transparent than the other but both sound better than my TS-808 RI. Lew
