just curious-didnt fender use 3 way switches on strats until the 70's or something? So how did Jimi get his quackier bassier tones?

The 5 way switch didn't come out until the early 70's....The guys learned early on though, that they could put the switch in between the 3 positions and get those out of phase type tones from their strats..

That's exactly right. It is to bad that Fender did not think of the 5 way switch in the 60's. The in between tone of the bridge and middle pickup is my favorite.

I read Duncan himself was doing ton's of mods to turn 3ways into 5 ways back in the early years..... All it took was to file a groove, i believe in the right spots to get the switch to stay at the 2 and 4 postions.

I remember reading that a 5 way switch wasn't an available option in those days..Things were way more simpler! LOL

i was actually just working on a '64 strat today that the guy swore the switch was broken. nope, it was a 3 way and he is a baffoon

My 73' came with the stock switch which was a 3 way.

yeah, some guys would fold the end of a match book and notch 'em in the groove

I think '77 was when the first 5-ways were introduced. I always remember reading that Clapton had to gently get his switch to stay in the 2 or 4 positions. Sounds like something to piss you off in the middle of a huge gig and the damn thing won't stay in the middle of the two positions!

I believe 77 was the first year Fender used them but the were available aftermarket in the early 70s. i heard Hendrix took the spring out of his 3 way so he could more esily get the inbetween positons.
