Did they just let you crank amps back in the day?

Re: Did they just let you crank amps back in the day?

Just got done cranking my Mesa, man, I wish I could do that all the time. I like how little overdrive I feel I have to use for my dirt sounds. I went from about 8 on the gain knob what I usually use to practice to 4 with the volume going up a few notches. Nice tones..... I remember cranking my Bassman for the first time and just being blown away how good it sounded....

Speaking of Bassmans... I just finished band practice today where I was running my Bassman at 6-7 on both channels, jumpered, with a Big Muff out front, guitar tuned to C#... so ****ing good brah

I don't know much about Peter Greens rigs, but I always undesrtood he used Orange amps in the studio. It really doesn't matter too much he always had such a great tone IMHO.

This is a great clip of Eric Clapton playing a 335 through a Dual Showman. Its sounds awesome

Eric, John Lennon, and yes Keith on bass. I think thats Mitch Mitchell on drums....

As I understood it Peter hated the Orange amps but used them because they sponsored him and gave him free amps or something (I like those old Orange amps so I'm not putting them down, just saying what I know). I know he used Fenders a lot for the majority of his career, and Marshalls earlier with Mayall. I remember reading an interview with an old magazine where he said he really liked Fenders but his favorite amp he had ever played through was a Vox AC50 but everyone he had played since that one didn't sound as good.

It's funny because I've read so much on his amps, go on the Marshall forums, yup, he used Marshalls mostly... go on the orange forum, yup, he used Oranges mostly... go on the Fender forums, yup, he used Fenders mostly... hehe... the only thing I can say is that I don't think he cared much... he did play Fenders most often it seems but when he was playing Oranges, he recorded with them, played live and still said he didn't like them. Just kept going. For some players it's really in the fingers and at some point it doesn't really matter what they are playing through. I guess he was one of those guys.... (like Mark Knopfler ;) )

I know that feeling I went to see The Damned Things awhile back and one of the opening acts was Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster and the guitar player had a full stack playing with a tele my ears were ringing for two days and it didnt help that I was right in front.

As for cranking amps now a days it depends on the venue and how big and loud your amp is? My 40W Combo will usually get the job done if I push the pre amp vol and keep the Master round 5 or 6. The smaller the wattage the more you can get away with cranking it but I usually never run through the house most of the time and even when they do Mic me its not the sound guy telling me to turn down but the keyboard player on stage. Really If you get the right sound guy you can crank the amp and he will still be able to work with your sound

I like some of the stuff by that band! (maylene and the sons of disaster)

Re: Did they just let you crank amps back in the day?

In all honesty in the late 60's and 70's, we played a lot of teen dances at teen centers, colleges, gyms, small town civic center, and you were only limited by the P.A., which you usually supplied and run yourself from the stage, it was usually column speakers in a powered mixer, so it was pretty lame. In clubs, they griped about the volume, so the trick was to start off at a low volume and eek it up every song, so they didn't notice, when more people hit he dance floor it soaked up more sound, so you could eek it up some more, as the bar got busy, they were making money, so you could put it up some more. Non-master volume amps ,you had to hit them pretty hard in the front, this was easier with a Les Paul than a Strat, or use a fuzz box. It was a lot of fun, music was THE thing, you were a local "star" if you were in a aband, no video-games to compete with, many fewer bands, No tabs, so it wasn't that easy to learn. You had to slow down the record and go over it million times, but you remembered it after all that.. That was pretty much what it was like being "Local Hero"..hahaha . I wouldn't have traded those times for anything. It was amazing......you had to have been there..............
