Did'nt care for the Custom Custom.

Having great expectations I put a Custom Custom in the bridge position of my Strat. This pickup is so mid heavy, too mid heavy actually. At first I thought I just had it to close to the strings so I lowered it. And again, and again. It's so mid heavy that it totally distorts my amps clean channel. I mean this thing barks! Badly! I know it's wired up right so, what's up with this thing? I've heard some clips of the CC that some of you've done and it sounds really good. So what's up?

Re: Did'nt care for the Custom Custom.

My amp is a Peavey Classic 30. In my Wolfgang I have a Dimarzio Air Zone which is suppose to be a hot pickup and it does'nt break up my amp the way the CC does.

Re: Did'nt care for the Custom Custom.

Is there something wrong with the pup? It's not supposed to be all that hot anyway. I know that if there is wire fragments in my joints from an old pup that when I strum harder I'll get a "crackle" sort of sound that might resemble distortion. Wanna check your wiring again? Maybe you need to clean out that joint a bit.

well i'm getting a custom custom installed soon so i'll tell u if i like it at all.

Re: Did'nt care for the Custom Custom.

I found the CC too mid strong in my Strat with 250k pots, 500k pots really helps the CC and all HBs when installed into Strats.

Re: Did'nt care for the Custom Custom.

I hope I won't have this problem in my Epi Dot, installing a CC in the bridge. Once it is installed I don't know if I will want to try to swap pickups in it, as I haven't attempted a pickup swap in a semi before. It's got to be a keeper before I attempt it. It's not going to get too muddy or anything? I don't want to install it and then hear a JB2 or a C5 and think I shoulda had a V8 hahaha.

Big time! 500K pots retain the highs those pickups need...otherwise they sound dark and muffled. 250K allows to much of the treble to bleed out of the circuit to ground...then a humbucker just sound dull and muffled, IMO.

As for the CC overdriving your amp, isn't that the idea? :laugh2:

Personally, I like something a little brighter tho, then the CC and not quite so hot too...I use the 59 Trembucker in my Strats.

You guys with the 'bucker's in your Strats, are these Strats HSS? And if so, are you mixing Duncan 'bucker's with standard Strat pups? How well do they balance?

Anything hotter than a 59B will overpower standrad Strat pickups, IMO. That's why I use it. Lew

Re: Did'nt care for the Custom Custom.

The other pickups in my Strat are Dimarzio's: Both Virtual 2's, the neck and middle models. I like them a lot. Very big, very warm Strat sound. For some reason these days anything that's low powered using an Alnico 5 magnet really bothers my ears. Something about the high's. I thought since the CC is higher powered using Alnico 2 it would overcome this problem. But it completely drowns out the other pickups. Maybe I'll take it all apart and do a rewire.
