Didn't know the Peavey 6534 Plus existed...

Re: Didn't know the Peavey 6534 Plus existed...

How so? I've always associated 6L6s with modern sounds, huge bottom end and sizzly high end, and EL34s with midrange emphasis a la Marshall. All wrong?

I've run my 5150 through the power section of a JVM before - not a good result. Original 5150 with less bass/low end power, and more top end harshness/high midrange fizz.

in the 90s I liked EL34s and a good word for why is the "musical" mids; not more mids, not fatter mids, just more things going on in the mid-range. And over time I gravitated towards 6L6s, and over the years I realized that one thing the 6L6 amps had in common was a *flatter* mid-range -- flat, with an "L", not fat -- and therefore a smoother overall sound. Easier to dial a more expansive mid-range because the mids are less "complex". With a good set of EL34s that complexity is more musical, and it's because of a more attenuated mid-range. So, less smooth than 6L6s. But also more "musical" to some people -- not me. Especially when also considering quality of current production. Me, I think that per capita across the board 6L6s are WAY better tubes than EL34s right now, and that's another reason I think the 6L6 version of these Peaveys is "smoother" and, seemingly to my ears, way better in the mids.

6534 is better than the 6505. I love my 6505, but but the EL34s definitely warm the amp up. Go to youtube and type in "monsters of high gain peavey 6534" and you'll see how great it sounds. As someone who's played it, I can attest that it sounds fantastic.

and I will say the exact same thing about the 6L6 Shiva vs. the El34 Shiva. The whole mids thing. In fact, I haven't played an EL34 amp since 2001 that I've liked. Every 6L6 amp sounds better to me. Because of the mids.

But in the 90s? Whole different story.

just playing, not clips. Took a while.

Hey man lots of people prefer EL34s over 6L6s but I don't think it's because they think they're smoother or have fatter, more haunting mids or such. Certainly not in this amp. I know it depends less on the tube than on the amp design *around* the tube, but in this case Peavey has given us a great case for A/B comparison. The 6505+ is my favorite Peavey, my favorite high-gainer, my favorite for lots of things. I am PVFan the Undaunted. I didn't care for that 34+ model, sorry dude.
