Diff: SSL-5 vs SSL-3 vs Quarter Pound?

If you guys could highlight the tonal differences between them, that would be great. I am running SSL-1 on the neck, but need a bridge with the widest versatility possible. Tight rhythm and fat leads, stratty but also rocking mids. I like to play early Black Sabbath to modern hard rock to early Pumpkins. And everything in between. Thanks.

I am also interested in essentially the exact same pickups for the exact same sounds. So...yknow...+1

You do know that it's the David Gilmour bridge pickup from my readings on other forums? I didn't know this until pretty recently...Nice pickup and one I have been using for alot of years in 2 strats...Just the bridge position ones though..

Re: Diff: SSL-5 vs SSL-3 vs Quarter Pound?

I have not used the SSL-5 or the SSL-3. StratDeluxer is right about the SSL-5 being the David Gilmour bridge pickup. I myself have used the qtr pounder flat & staggered pickups. These are the fattest sc pickups made. I couldn't tell any difference in tone between the flat or staggered. They are both great pickups, but they are noisey. Also, these are the pickups in the Fender Ritchie Blackmore guitars.

Re: Diff: SSL-5 vs SSL-3 vs Quarter Pound?

Didn't get it done, the guitar has some other issues that need to be addressed first.

SSL-5 for Gilmour? I thought he uses EggMgMuffin pickups?

Re: Diff: SSL-5 vs SSL-3 vs Quarter Pound?

I have used and own all 3. The Custom is the most vintage, but with boosted mids and output. The Hot has big mids and lots of output. Not very bright, but I have the tapped version. The 1/4er is big and nice. Plenty of highs, mids and lows. The only downside is that it doesn't match the other pickups. I currently have the Hot in the bridge, Custom in the middle (not into quack) and AII in the neck. I would have the 1/4 in the bridge except for the cosmetics. ;)

Which has the bigger bass and low end, Custom or Hot?
Which has tighter and more articulate low end?

Thanks.

Easy to answer...The SSL5/6 is more articulate...The hot has more lows, more balls, and will be darker....If you're looking for decent bridge/middle tones, you will lose it going higher output/wind over the SSL5/6...

The SSL5/6 is a nice pickup...Still does what a strat bridge pickup does, but the highs are rolled off a bit, more mids, and slightly more overall lowend by comparison.Still plays pretty nice with an SSL1 or vintage type middle wind sc.

Re: Diff: SSL-5 vs SSL-3 vs Quarter Pound?

The audio clips don't really really help in trying to determine something. :)

So if the SSL-5 is stratty. Then the hot is not stratty? More humbucker like or p90 like? :thanks:

Not really either....Just a darker, ballsier, beefier pickup, stronger lows...At least the samples give you a better idea...The same pickup in my strat could sound alot different than your's?

SD has a return/swap policy...Pull the plug on one and see what you like.

Re: Diff: SSL-5 vs SSL-3 vs Quarter Pound?

i hear the ssl5 to be more stratty than the ssl3 or qp. the ssl5 has a similar eq curve to a typical fender pup but a little flatter (bring up the mids and warm up the highs). the ssl3 is a very middy single coil, not a humbucker type tone but not much like an old strat tone. the qp has a fat tone, more bottom than the ssl3 but also a stronger top end. its not bright but its got some treble.

Re: Diff: SSL-5 vs SSL-3 vs Quarter Pound?

So the EQ would be something like this huh?

Thin sound to fat:

SSL5 > SSL3 > SSL4 (QP)

Re: Diff: SSL-5 vs SSL-3 vs Quarter Pound?

I think the SSL3 is the fatest because of the big mids and reduced highs. Some say the SSL4 is P-90ish.
