Diff: SSL-5 vs SSL-3 vs Quarter Pound?

Re: Diff: SSL-5 vs SSL-3 vs Quarter Pound?

the ssl3 has a thicker mid range than the ssl4 but the ssl4 sounds bigger

Re: Diff: SSL-5 vs SSL-3 vs Quarter Pound?

well i just picked up an ssl-5, hope to have it in tomorrow, run it thru the rig on Tuesday. if all goes well I'll give you some feedback

Hey Scott ( & Lazyfinger),

I had a set of SSL-5's in a '73 Strat I had back in the '90's. They sounded nice, but a little too bright for my tastes. I've got an SSL-3 in my current Strat with Fender Fat '50's in the middle and neck, and they sound awesome together.

Haven't tried the Quarter Pound though.

Close to my setup in this blonde strat, but I do have the SSL6 in the bridge...The Fat 50 neck and middle are great!

So I got it done last night

It is in my Wanye Kramer trib I did up, Indian Red Cedar body, Maple neck, Rosewood board, 5ook pots and .022 cap with 1 vol and 1 tone

SSL-5 bridge, GFS '59 (w/SD A5 mag), SSL-1 neck

So far so good, sounds killer, really happy with it. Rehearsal tonight and Thursday and a gig Saturday so I'll have a better idea after the weekend but not too bright by my standards. More open sounding than the QP which has a more midrangey sound, closer to the Hot but more Strat-y sounding. I can still get that sort of jangle out of the SSL-5, been a while since I had the Hots but I remember thinking it needed a little more vibe.

Thanks for the feedback, looking forward to the final verdict as well.

So I know that mostly it's a hush hush on what ingredients are used for the recipe science of pickups, still I figure why not ask if I could learn. I like to know every bit as possible about the pups and guitars. So I know that the SSL1 are wound with 42 AWG, and there's a strong assumption that the SSL6 uses 43, but does anybody have an idea what's being used to wound the SSL-3 and Quarter Pound?

So back to this thred...

I'm really digging this two particular tones. I realize it won't be exact, but which of the these three SSLs could get me there the closest?

Thanks a lot guys.
