Difference between Dimarzio 36th Anniversary models?

Re: Difference between Dimarzio 36th Anniversary models?

The bridge (DP223) is slightly hotter @ 285 millivolts and has a DC resistance of 8.6k

The neck (DP103) is 250 millivolts and 7.31k DC.

Re: Difference between Dimarzio 36th Anniversary models?

Wow. MF has fourteen different pickups listed if you search Dimarzio 36th. I thought I was comparing a 103 to a 223, but I guess I accidentally compared two 223s! Plus, there are different prices for the same options, ha ha. I just went through them all again and yep, I compared two of the same. Thanks TC, I appreciate your pointing that out for me.

Re: Difference between Dimarzio 36th Anniversary models?

Well they have black, zebra, double cream, nickel, and aged nickel in both neck and bridge versions. So that's 12 versions right there. The price differences are those without a cover, regular nickel covers, and aged nickel.

Re: Difference between Dimarzio 36th Anniversary models?

Plus the other confusion is the old PAF is gone and the new PAF (same DP103 number) sounds hotter and IRCC it is the old PAF Classic neck? They really did confuse a lot of their product line in the last few years in regards to their old and new pickups PAF wise.

If someone wants the classic setup used by the likes of many 70's guitarists DP103 PAF neck and DP100 Super Distortion bridge (Al Dimeola, Ace Frehley etc.) well the neck would be a crap shoot since the old PAF sounds different then the current PAF.

That's why I don't understand why Dave Murray's sig strat uses the 36th Anniv PAF in the neck, when he obviously used the old one. Well, I do get it, but it seems a bit silly really, to buy a guitar totally based on one he played years ago then put a different pickup in the neck.

Re: Difference between Dimarzio 36th Anniversary models?

I was astounded by the number of different models too. The base differences are the DP103 and the slightly hotter DP223. Then, beyond that, each is available with:

1. short legs or vintage "long legs"
2. shiny bobbins (vintage look, like Duncan/Gibson bobbins) only in black, creme or zebra
3. 2-conductor (braided metal cover) or 4 conductor wire
4. covered or uncovered
5. aged/worn covers
6. full vintage (i.e. long legs, shiny bobbins, covered) or aged full vintage (same as full vintage, but with worn covers).

WHEW! That's alot of different combinations, because you can get shiny bobbin pickups that are short legged, in 4-conductor or 2-conductor. Alot of mix & match possibilities.

I don't think the way MF labels them makes it any easier to figure out, since they reuse alot of stock language from the "base" models in the description, which may or may not be accurate for that actual pickup (i.e. it might say 4-conductor, but if it's full vintage that would be incorrect).

Who cares? It sounds awesome.

+1

Before these "anniversary" models, the PAF was just the DP 103 and was designated for either neck or bridge. Too bad it was discontinued, and quite hard to believe IMHO. I still have two new old DP 103s just itching to be placed in a future Carvin build. :)
