difference between ESP and LTD

darnright

RepententRodentologist
Are the LTD's the Squiers for ESP? Are ESP's made in Japan? Are LTD's made who-knows-where? I have played both over the years and both were fine guitars. I always thought the LTD's I've played were better than say, most Epis and Most Squiers. Any info?

Re: difference between ESP and LTD

hello, wes your ESP expert here.

ESP- Electric Sound Products. high quality japanese made guitars.

LTD- Cheaper factory made versions

both are great. but you can tell the difference

Re: difference between ESP and LTD

Well, Its sort of like Fender and Fender USA guitars.
great quality vs extroardinary quality.
ESPs are made in Japan, and LTDs are made in Korea and Indonesia.

Re: difference between ESP and LTD

Yes, LTD is to ESP as Squier is to Fender ... BUT, the LTD's are of much better quality than you'd get from a Squier. Heck, I like my LTD's better than some Fender's I've played (keep in mind, I'm talking about feel only).

... and China. My SC-207 was made in China. Great guitar regardless of where it's made.

Re: difference between ESP and LTD

I'd say the higher end LTD's are just as good as any ESP guitar.

The higher end LTD models are great guitars for the money.

Re: difference between ESP and LTD

...ESPs are quality instrument, LTDs to me feel quite anonym and without personality. All about hardware and quality, nothing else, which to me is NOT what a guitar should be about. Yes they're ok guitars. But nothing that amazing I feel.

While they are great guitars for the money, they're just not as good as the ESP standard line. I've owned an EC1K and recently compared a few of them to Eclipse II's when I was looking for an LP type guitar... the Eclipse II's are just way better instruments than the LTD 1K series. Better wood, much better attention to detail, fret work was perfect - they just felt 'alive' in comparison

Re: difference between ESP and LTD

The lower end LTDs, not so good. The higher end LTDs are great though. Of course the ESPs will be higher quality but the playability felt pretty much the same to me. The ESPs however use amazing looking woods. I've played on a honeyburst eclipse before and the flame top on that thing was glorious. But I was disapointed with the guitar because the body is not thick like a les paul.

But LTD 400 series and up are giants for their price range. They come with quality hardware, pickups, and sound.

I just traded some of my cheaper guitars for an EC-400-VF
It is much more alive feeling than either of my Epi LP's. Beautiful wood as well. Thanks for all the tips!

Re: difference between ESP and LTD

Yeah I really like my MH-400 very much.....and now with the L-500XL it's crazy! Nothing but solid metal.

Re: difference between ESP and LTD

There is a big difference between ESP and LTD, but the price of each is warranted, just like with PRS and SE.

Re: difference between ESP and LTD

I had a chance to play Kirk Hammet's old ESP (without knowing that it used to be his) and it felt absolutely amazing. It almost played itself.

I'd have to disagree the LTD to ESP as to the Fender Mexican built to the USA build, however both are great guitars. I have played a few LTD and almost bought one. but very nice.

That is indeed a closer analogy but still not spot on I think. There are some great MIM gems out there but they don't come with quality pickups and hardware like the LTD 400s and up. I know when I had a MIM strat those pickups were out of there in a hurry! :drill:

My MIM Strat I purchased replacement pickups at the sametime I ordered the guitar.

Also I read someone the the lower models are not that good. I can agree on that, but once you get out of the bargin basement of LTD thay are very nice. I played and liked a MH-250 once very nice for the price.

Re: difference between ESP and LTD

You get what you pay for. The lower end LTDs are good for the money, but they won't stack up against a top of the line ESP. I've never played a high end LTD myself, but I hear good things.

Also, In my experience, I find the Japanese ESPs to be nicer than any of the American made ones I've played. I want to use my coworkers wife as an interpreter for a Japanese custom shop build one of these days. :)

*ducks*

Re: difference between ESP and LTD

There were VERY FEW American ESPs ever made and they must be quite rare now..? I believe they made some somewhere in the early 90s or late 80s, they also had a workshop in German. But out of what you see right now, 100% of ESPs (NOT LTD) are made in Japan.

Re: difference between ESP and LTD

I have played and owned/returned a few high end LTD models. For $1000+ LTD, the features justify the cost, but the quality belongs in the mid range price. For maybe 2-3 hundred more, you could get a much better quality/sounding ESP. I would not pay 1000+ for an LTD. Not worth it in my opinion. Get an ESP!

well, I wasn't really talking about "quality" ... more of "company relations."

Kinda like Epiphone/Gibson, Squier/Fender, LTD/ESP ... catch my drift?
