Differences between alnico 8 magnets !

I have two guitars Ibanez , same model , same pickup with alnico 8 .
Yesterday I found that one was not as good as the other ; no body , shrill , a tendancy for feedback .
Today I changed the magnet for alnico 8 , but coming from another lot , and GONE the problem , the guitar is now better than the other one !

So just to say that magnet , even of the same type can be of a very different quality !
Bad one were coming through a forum member named Chill :rocket:
( joke ! how could he know , he tryied to help by sending to France the precious alnico 8 ), good one are coming from Wymore Guitar also member of this forum .

fab, I could be wrong but I would assume their source for both are All Star Magnetics, as I thought I read thats where Wymore sources them from and if Chill is the same guy I am thinking of he was the one that placed a big order for the Alnico 8's last year right? If so his source was All Star Magnetics as thats where I bought mine from after reading the Custom 8 thread when it exploded.

That said even if two seemingly identical magnets came from the same manufacturer, their tolerances might be such that there is a discernable difference.

Probably but Allstar Magnetic don't produce them , they probably had different producers .
Visually they are not cut the same way and the ears tell you that they are nothing alike .

I get my magnets from AllStar as well and honestly have never heard anything bad thus far.

All Alnico is made in China these days due to environmental rules. But you can get A8 from Allstar.

I'm trying to think of how a bad magnet would cause feedback and be more shrill. It would seem to have more treble and output for that. Hmmm.

Yes Zangh , you can get your magnets from Allstar and they get them from China maybe .
But as any product , there seem to be good and jerk in alnico 8 magnets .

A8's have been pretty consistent in my experience. Any differences are probably level of charge.

I got one from Wymore, and it was super-powerful, with massive string pull that made it harder to bend notes and sucked the sustain out of the notes! It was my first...and last...piece of A8, but when I posted about it, it didn't seem to gel with other people's experience, so it seems possible that there can indeed be different strengths....

Hi Fab, i think you are raving about the Ibanez Super 70. Dispite that fact that they are all named Super 70 they are of different construction over the years. I read about ceramic magnets in the younger one. That would explain a lot!!
