Differences Between ES-335 and ES-335 Satin?

Hi guys i was really liking those gibson ES-333 models but they took them off the market it seems, as they are not on thier website. So iw as looking on thier site and i went itno the custom shop area and i noticed they had the ES-335 there and underneath it was a satin version of it! Does anyone here know the price difference? I'm hoping its as cheap as thier faded series instruments or close to. Also what other major differences are there?

After buying my taylor, i really want a new electric guitar BADLY! Its between a gibson LP or an Es-335, possibly studio, classic or somehting like that who knows. I just would liek your thhoguhts as well. Cheers lads.

Pricewise, it's pretty high (check it out here on Musician's Friend) but I'm sure you'd be getting an amazing instrument. Check out some used Es-137s or things like that. They tend to be pretty cheap used, and they're in the same family as the 335. Good luck with it!

335s are more suited for blues and jazz.

they are well suited for alternative and rock too. bernard butler is a 335 player and iirc, thom yorke and jonny greenwood.

just thoguht i'd add that the foo fighers use es-335's as well, and they rock so hard! Also even tom delonge uses a es-335 and although he may not be a reaslly good guitar player his sound is pretty thick on distortion.

A 335 is for whatever you want it to be for. I mean come on; if Uncle Ted can rock out with a Byrdland folks can definitely use a 335. I'll never forget when my younger cousin came over to my house to jam with me and some guys he didn't think I could play rock with my 330, you guys should have seen his face after we fired up!

It has a solid center block to cut down on your feedback, and give you more sustain so it marries hollowbody, and solidbody traditions.


Actually man I was looking at one at GC what I've noticed....

333---back plate, dark binding, no peghead inlays, generally heavier, Kluson tuners light red, plain top, uncovered pups

335 satin---no back plate, no binding on neck, normal color binding on body, Kluson tuners, peghead inlays, darker more vintage colored red, plain top, cover pups

335 gloss---no back plate, bound neck and body with normal color bindings, Grovers, figured top, covered pups

I think the back plate (although it makes it easier to change pups for us) is something that was done for Gibson to cut down time for assembly since it was a cheaper guitar. But this changes the way the guitar sounds, remember sound in hollow, or semi-hollow guitars is affected by bracing, and a flat place on the back with a plate couldn't be conducive to replicating the tone we all know and love.

I would recommend buying a used 335, or a LP instead of buying an inferior model. I am not really sure what the difference between a 335 and the 335 satin is, but if it is anything like the faded LP it is a long way from the real deal. The other guitar player that I play with bought a 1989 335 sunburst for 1200.00. Shop around there are some deals out there.

The 333's have the binding on the neck. The difference between a 333 and a 335 is the 333 has the backplate, a satin finish, ceramic magnet pickups that really don't do the the guitar justice, and the kluson style tuners instead of grovers. Oh, and speed knobs instead of top hat knobs and no pickguard.

I added duncans to my 333 along with top hat knobs and grovers and it smokes. I love it and paid $850.00 with a hard shell case. Those are a great deal and come up on eBay all the time. I even added a few coats of clear gloss lacquer to mine and buffed it out so it now has a gloss finish.

I'm not sure about the 335 satin but from what I have heard it does not have the neck binding and has the satin finish, so those are the only differences.
