Differences between SG and LesPaul?

Ok I would like to know the biggest differences between a Gibson SG and a Gibson Les Paul?? i.e. sound, physical features like neck width, frets, etc.

Also what are the differences between the Gibson models of these guitars and the less expensive Epiphone models??

thanks

Matt

Re: Differences between SG and LesPaul?

SG will have a little less bass, a little less sustain. (Atleast the ones I've played). A SG will be lighter and easier to manuever. A Les Paul will have a good amount of bass, lovely warmth, and a smoother high end. A Les Paul is naturally chunky in both tone and construction so if you don't like heavy, big guitars then go for the SG. Hope this helps.

+1 to that.

Re: Differences between SG and LesPaul?

The deeper body and heavy weight of the les paul adds to it's darker tone and more sustain...Most LPs have a maple top over mahogany to brighten the LP up a bit..

The SG is just all mahogany and doesn't have the maple cap and is brighter already compared to the LP...The positioning of the SG's bridge position pickup creates alot of headaches for people,as they complain the SG lacks balls in that position...

I own an SG and a LP and the SG is a little bit more tonal versatile but just doesn't sing in the sustain like the LP does...The SG is quite a bit lighter, almost in a strat way and more comfy to play standing up all night...

Re: Differences between SG and LesPaul?

Pickups are placed differently on SGs than on LPs. They are both closer to the bridge.

I don't have a problem with my SG bridge pup tone, after I changed away the horrid 498t.

And most of all, LPs are ugly and SGs look gorgeous.

but what about the EPIPHONE models of both these guitars??

I like my the paul... best of both worlds... a bit of SG, a bit LP.

Re: Differences between SG and LesPaul?

Played a few different types of LP and SG over the years, just for the experience as I'm "Double cut-away offset" man.

Better access up high on the SG, more sustain on the LP, different neck profiles which are really year specific (Played one 335 that was so thin you couldn't use heavier than 009 or the neck would warp so quickly when bending strings or SRV vibrato that you HAD to re-tune after every song.) LP are heavy and not a "sit on your knee" guitar, the SG are a lot more comfortable.

The eternal schoolboy, Angus, has said "That for a little bloke like me a Les Paul will give you hip displacement."

P.S. Doesn't everybody WANT to be an eternal schoolboy like Angus, and he's just turned 50. I still got hope!

I'll add this... an Epi SG is pretty close to a Gibson Sg...both will have mahogany bodies and necks, Epi hardware is not as good and IMO both the epi and the Gibson (At least the new ones) will need a pickup swap. But, all in all they are pretty close. The LP's are a little different. A Gibson LP is mahogany with a maple top, the Epi counterpart is usally a mahogany body with an alder cap, and on the burst models it will have a very thin maple veneer over the alder...some of them have alder bodies as well, some of the Epi's have maple necks while the Gibsons have mahogany (most of the time). Do a search here on the form there has been lots of talk about Gibson VS Epi LP's...

Re: Differences between SG and LesPaul?

Gibbys have a nutrocelulose finish (for the most part), and Epis have poly. SG style guitars are just the most comfortable thing out there for me.

I'll say this- my epi sg isn't even made of mahogony- it's the cheap one. But it sounds pretty good, and I like the neck better than the gibson version. One day I'll buy a real sg, but it's gotta feel right and the ones I've tried don't feel as good in my hands at all.
