Digitech Whammy?? -HELP

Hey guys,
being procrastinating and i just got into this Digitech Whammy business. I see a few guitarists use em, including Vai and stuff. So just wondering, what are it's uses? I see it has a octave up/down function as well. Would i be able to use it as a Octave pedal? As well as all the other functions, cause that seems pretty cool. Would it be any good to buy and play around with? It's pretty bulky though.

Dimebag used it pretty effectively on one tune off of Far Beyond Driven....can't remember the name now. Paul Gilbert abuses one pretty well also. It can be kind of like stepping on a cat.

It's a sweet pedal. You should go mess with one in a store before you buy it though.

Why? I got one for xmas and never tried one before, much less heard one other than in recordings. I'll admit I don't ever use it, I'm not much of an fx guy and I've been too lazy to experiment more with it. Man I need to get away from this computer and go play with my guitars

Yeah, definately try before you buy. There are three popular version, the WH1 that goes for a mint on ebay, the reissue WH4 that people say doesn't track as good and the XP100 that includes both Whammy and Wah. If you are into crazy noises and sounds, look for a "Jetpack Mods" XP-1000 on ebay, he basically takes a pedal from the XP series and mods it so you have a 4 way selector to chose from the Whammy/Wah, Modulator, Space Station and Reverberator. Great sounds to be had in there... Although the WH4 is a bit simpler and more rugged.

i have the whammy reissue ,and it is a unique pedal!
if you own a floyded guitar ,you would just use some harmonizers and the "octave up" pitchshifter.
The octaver is "not" precise ,and can't track the lower notes well.
But if you use it like Dime ,RATM ,or VAI .that's the right pedal.

Re: Digitech Whammy?? -HELP

I've got the WH4, and its always tracked pretty well for me. The treadle got a bit sticky though recently, just took a squirt of WD40. There are some really cool and out there sounds to be had from it, but its also good as a straight harmoniser. It can thicken up a lead part nicely. The octave down thing can sound realy great under some heavy fuzz. The ability to do a divebomb on a Les Paul is also an added bonus!

I like it, but you do need to be careful that you don't end up sounding like everyone else who uses one. Its a very obvious tone when the octave up is engaged, sounds quite artificial, but in a cool way.

For recent Whammy use, I love Jack White on the new White Stripes album.

So far it sounds more like a pedal for metalcore solos and stuff like that. That's probably not my thing huh.

I just bought one the other day. I have no idea how to use it in a musical way, although it's fun to mess around with the pitch shifter. It can nail Vai's "The Animal" harmonized tone.

It's definately not for blues rock, but the Whammy, more than any other pedal really is what you make of it. It works well in anything more experimental, but keep in mind everyone from Gilmour (Marooned) to Morello (Killing in the Name) to Satriani (Cool No. 9) have used it.
