Dilemma.... what would you do?

Ok, you are Selling a bunch of guitars, cuz U really need the money and are moving so cant take em with you, and you get real and realize that you dont need/deserve all that you have. However, found a guitar that is basically on your top 3 dream guitars list, and its on sale at a great price, your sales will make enuff to buy it. Do you buy the guitar, or do you say no and pay off the credit card like you planned?

Also, getting said guitar would require selling a one of a kind guitar, that you love owning cuz its cool and plays great, but you know you would play the new one more?

Discuss, what you might do....

Re: Dilemma.... what would you do?

LOL! She stays bro... My hypothetical scenario is referring to my washburn Wm526

Re: Dilemma.... what would you do?

"don't need/deserve all that you have"? Check your premise.

Re: Dilemma.... what would you do?

I would pay off my card if it were me. I understand the dilemma though, top 3 dream guitars is serious business. What is it exactly?

Re: Dilemma.... what would you do?

Well considering all those factors I would pay of the bills. The kid and family is the priority (and I need to keep reminding my self about that). that's why I would be selling them. Even if I was not married and no kids. Bills and credits just mount, and it can get frightening . Good things will always come. A year back I let go of a nice Hammer standard, going for a great price.
I am actually moving out. And so have put a full stop to any guitar. I am settled with my Amp. Oh and I need the money hehehe. Depending on how things go I might even make a bigger "MOVING OUT", for a better future for the little one. If that is the case the gear is going to be difficult to carry. I think I would carry only one Electric and I would love to carry my Jumbo.

Re: Dilemma.... what would you do?

There will always be another guitar, there will always be another great deal, there will always be another one of a kind... its just stuff. Never put that ahead of being financially sound, You never know when things might take a turn for the worse.

Big +1.

Re: Dilemma.... what would you do?

It'll just hurt more when you need to sell that one too.

Just find a couple of nice low end imports and play those until you get your life straight.

Re: Dilemma.... what would you do?

You already know what the right thing to do is.....
This post is just to try and justify doing the wrong thing ;)

Pay off your cards, bro.

Re: Dilemma.... what would you do?

Pay the credit card first, other wise you may end selling even your shirt... If you are a pro player just keep what you REALLY need to play the gigs, I would think a main guitar and a backup guitar would do but I am not you.

LOL! LOTS of good posts in this thread and thanks for the responses all! I think this one sums it up the best.. I DO know the right thing to do, and Ive ALWAYS put my kids first. I was kinda looking for some justification.. haha Its just that this particular guitar has been on my radar for over a year, and they marked it down $700 to try to move it, and of course that really made my tootsies roll.... But, it sold anyway and I know I have to take care of biz round here.

Re: Dilemma.... what would you do?

Not paying off a credit card balance fully only postpones the day when the same issue resurfaces and further "sacrifices" become necessary.

Re: Dilemma.... what would you do?

I've been in your shoes. Stumbling upon a "dream guitar" is tough, but look at it this way...

No matter how "great" the price is on that guitar, every year you keep those funds on a credit card, you're eating away at how much you really saved on it.

For instance, if the guitar is selling for 25% below its normal market value (ex: you get a $1700 guitar for $1275), holding that balance for just 2 years on the average credit card will make the savings null and keep you stressed out and obligated to the card that much longer, not to mention the other side effects of maintaining balances, such as lowered credit scores, possible difficulty getting approved for vehicle/home loans, etc. With many cards today having rates closer to 18-20% and more, holding that balance for even a few months can really cut into the perceived "deal" you're getting!

Is this the type of bargain that will NEVER come around again? Is this a type of guitar that you would be able to purchase in the future once your finances are better sorted? You also need to ask yourself: do you have a history of being able to pay off cards in the time frames you set for yourself or is this a case where, along with the rest of the soul searching you're doing, you need to implement some serious self-discipline and forgo the guitar for the time being, play what you have and concentrate on getting to a better place overall?

Re: Dilemma.... what would you do?

Personally, I would sell all my guitars but the one I play most and my most valuable. Truthfully, you only need one. Keep the one you play all the time. The other most valuable guitar can be perceived as an investment if you're willing to hang onto it long enough, so I'd keep that one too. I don't need the cash so I haven't sold any, but I feel so wasteful looking at the excess of gear I have. People are starving and I'm hoarding guitars and amps for no reason.

As for your Washburn WM526, just sell the guitar. Every few years you go through this same dilemma with that same guitar. You've talked yourself into liking it more than you actually do just because of the one-off paint job. That is no reason to keep a guitar, in my opinion.

. . . but I feel so wasteful looking at the excess of gear I have. People are starving and I'm hoarding guitars and amps for no reason.

I wish people wouldn't say stuff like this. You didn't steal them, did you? You bought them. You just supported a whole bunch of people. People who manufacture guitars. People who sell guitars. People in advertising and marketing. A whole slew of folks who need your dollars to send their kids to college and pay the rent. You done good. They aren't on welfare. You could've blown it all on booze or "toot". You didn't.

You aren't hoarding, and there is a reason. ;)
