I'm not a Pro by any means..but Road Kin will not get ya too close to that Soldano/Modded Marshall EVH sound....great friggin amp...but not what ya want for that sound. Bogner should be a good choice. I've played the classic, I think it was. Great amp. I think it's over priced though. Don't get me wrong, shes a tone monster, but I don't think it sounds any better than a Splawn or Voodoo which cost half as much.
Get yourself a reactor. With the POD (or just a Flextone) it will cover a wide variety of sounds. Not perfect..but for what you need and can afford it's as close as you are gonna get.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned this yet...Traynor YCV50 Blue.
You can find them around $600 US if you're patient enought, and I know I can get VERY good EVH tones out of mine by cranking the preamp volume and setting the gain just above 1/2. It's got better cleans than the Classic 50 and a distortion channel that's surprisingly versatile. With the gain boost off, think chimy Vox AC30 up to cranked Plexi territory. Kick in the boost and it will take you from GnR to EVH all the way to Iron Maiden. It takes a while for the Vintage 30 to get broken in (it sounded quite sterile for the first weak or two), but really warms up nicely. SoCalSteve has an Eminence V12 in his and says it sounds even better, which I don't doubt one bit. I'm like you in that I get bored only having one or two tones, but I keep putting off buying a multieffects pedal (my original plan was to run one in front of this and I left room in my budget) because I just can't see that I need one.

Over kill for me, I haven't mentioned it, but from playing my classic I've already stuffered substantial hearing loss. Not to mention it's not going to have the versitility I'm after. I know what they are man, and they do sound good, but next week I'll probably like something else.
I'm sure you understand what I'm saying, tho I will be looking around a bit this time to make sure the reactor will be good for me. Does anyone know what guitar shops carry them? Sam ash, GC, GW, Guitars and more? Tho I guess testing one in person isn't going to be much help because its just PA.

^It can get loud yes, but consider that the Classic 50 is 212 compared to the YCV's 112. Plus, the beauty of the YCV50 is that it really sounds good even at low volumes. I don't think I've ever played a tube amp that reacts so well with the master volume below two. Oh well.

You been given lot's of great suggestions. You seem to have your mind made up already for the Atomic Reactor.
...I almost mentioned the Traynor in my EL84 post. I think you should check into the Traynors. But, if you want everything, it probably won't meet your want's either. I think you should pare down you desire to be everything to a few good tones that you could practice and make them great for you. A guy really only needs a couple good tones, right? Don't we?

True, I just feel more comfortable knowing if I don't like the sound of the amp, I can just turn a switch and have a different amp. Or if I don't like the modeler, I just get another modeler.
I haven't made my mind up, I just can't think of anything more versitile for the money, or much less, better quality. And I already know the podXT does many things very well.

Been there..done that....as the saying goes
I'm still that way with guitars to a certain extent..always looking for the "holygrail" tone..but I did pretty much give up on everything besides Gibsons...thats where I started and where I always end back up at..on occasion I jones for something else like a Strat or Tele..but at the end of the day..it's a Gibson for me...
Same with amps...went through 'em all...always come back to a Marshall...whether it's a model of one or a boutique that sounds like one, or the real thing.
You'll figure out eventually what is THE tone ya want...and you'll come back to it time and time again..and eventually won't desire anything else in a serious way. But it takes time..lotsa years..and for some of us, we NEVER learn

I already found my tone with my warlock and tele, hands down. Now its just time to get an amp that does alot of things well. But yea, I do know what the tone I want is, and where to get it. But i'll need a good paying job 1st, very good paying. *Cough* SLO-100 *Cough*
I'd never have any use for an SLO-100 still, TBH. I'd be better off with the reactor, until I own a stadium to play in. Heh

Mephis, if EVH land is what you want. I'll bet a pepperoni pizza that a Boss DS-1 or some other pedal will go along way to getting you close to EVH-tone with your classic 50.

I'm suprized it took this long to say Boss DS-1. You can find them at any GC for $39 and send it down to Stratdeluxer(John Spina). He WILL do magic to it and probably put you right where you want to be with your tone. Drop him a line, he does great things and hes a HELL of a guy!

Hmm, he actually recomended this marshall jackhammer to me.
It does take my amp to new levels, but the amp just doesn't like getting driven hard.
P.S. Theres a guitar show comming up next weekend, I'm taking my peavey classic 50 and going to see if theres anything worth trading for. On the pallet would be, 5150, JCM800, or any other amp like that.
No I wouldn't nessarly sell my amp and buy one, but i sure as hell would trade with cash for one.

To me, the foundation for a great crunch tone is a great clean tone. Sounds like you have the foundation. I know John has said that he likes the Jackhammer and I take his word for it, but I don't know that it can compare to a modded pedal. He's very resonable with his prices too.

That logic holds water, but I'd have to run so much crap to keep my amp from getting massive feedback, for that much gain. I might look into it, but then I'd be outa cash and be screwed if it didn't work out.
I'm sure John does amazing work, but this amp might as well not even have a lead channel. I don't see how it can magicly turn into a high-gain beast just because you put a pedal infront of it. Or how it'll get a sealed cab tone.
What I'm trying to say is... I don't like anything about this amp... hahahahaha.
I don't like how it's made, I don't like how it sounds (even clean), and I don't like how it looks. I just really think I'd be better off with something else, than trying to make this work.

I'd strongly recommend you try the new Vox cooltron british bulldog distortion into the clean channel of the C50. I think you'll be very pleasantly surprised. I've tried it into an el84 amp set to clean and it had a very Van Halenish character at reasonable volumes.

I'd strongly recommend you try the new Vox cooltron british bulldog distortion into the clean channel of the C50. I think you'll be very pleasantly surprised. I've tried it into an el84 amp set to clean and it had a very Van Halenish character at reasonable volumes.

Hahahaha, I about fell out of my chair when I read this.
I just discovered how ****ed over sounding the lead channel is on the classic, it totaly ruins the tonal quality of the pedals, and makes it hard to pull much gain.
But cranking the cleans and maxing the pedal out does wonders, still, my JH-1 isn't pouring enough coal to it. WE NEED MORE POWER SCOTTY!
Btw, I'll get another amp before I'll spend $225 on a pedal, because It'd be cheaper to sell my amp and get somethin else.

My main concern is that you don't actually have a POD right now, so buying a Reactor makes very little sense. You proposed getting the Reactor, then saving up to get a used POD. That is completely backwards - get the POD first, then if you decide you actually need it, get the Reactor.
Please forgive me if you've answered these questions already: Do you actually do any gigging right now? Are you rehearsing with a band? If you answered no to both of those, then you may not even NEED a Reactor. A PodXT through your headphones or stereo is great for just practicing, and it will be easier on your hearing too. If you're jamming or playing out, then go for the Reactor. That's what it's for.
I also wouldn't discount the Flextone III if I were you. They are excellent amps, and probably the best value-for-money amp on the market today. The amp and effect models are all from the Vetta II (which is also where the PodXT's models come from).
