Dimarzio 36th Anniversary PAF set, whats its Duncan equal ?

Re: Dimarzio 36th Anniversary PAF set, whats its Duncan equal ?

The 36th PAF have a mid peak which isn't really typical of other vintage humbuckers. They offer a blend of vintage and modern tone.

The DiMarzio 36th Anniversary PAF's are Amazing, they're very Seymour like but a combo of several pups in one.

Whoever said they wont do Hard Rock better re-asses their definition of Hard Rock.

They are on Par with the Duncan Custom for grind but have a very buttery top end for an A-5.

Absolutely Killer pickups in every way.

agreed. they do hard rock really well.

I kinda look at them as vintage hot pickups.

carvin's original h22 pickups are much the same in that regard.

They're a very well rounded & balanced pickup but also clean up & sound wonderful clean.

But also can be Hot.

A few comments:

Number one, as many said - there is no Duncan like those. Larry has his ear, Seymour has his. They are different. I generally (not always) prefer Seymour's ear/approach.

That said, as all things PAF go, I prefer a standard DiMarzio PAF to a 59. Nothing wrong with a 59, I just like the PAF. Now the 36th has it's own fan club above and beyond the standard PAF. Kinda like A2P's and Slash set....I'm personally fine with regular old A2P's.

Finally, in that zone, consider that the Seth, the PG, and even BB1/2's are all valid contenders. Just different flavors of the same thing. Go with what you like best.

What is the standard Dimarzio PAF? Looking at Dimarzio website and cannot find any.

It's an old discontinued model. It's basically the Air Classic without the Airbucker technology.

Does any of you know how the Dimarzio PAF EQ goes? I don't know if the ''old'' DP103 is better than the new DP103 (PAF36th...).
I'm looking for one to match a Super Distortion in the bridge. Just don't want a neck (bass heavy) pickup...

Re: Dimarzio 36th Anniversary PAF set, whats its Duncan equal ?

Howdy,

I've had a '59 and a 36th anniversary PAF in the bridge of my "bright" toned ES-335. The '59 was nearly all bass and treble-to nobody's surprise. The '59 is better in the bridge than in the neck position, but I digress. I could live with the bright '59 in the bridge of my 335..it did have a pleasing helping of bass, btw.

Now, for the DiMarzio 36th Anni PAF in the bridge. Compared to the '59, the spikey trebles were replaced with smooth mids and a bit more power. The 36th definitely has mids, compared to the '59 from SD.This pickup proved suprsingly useful for Chimey, clean "british-invasion" tones through my Dr. z Carmen Ghia! Paired with a DiMarzio Air classic in the neck, it's a combination that invites comparison. For me, the 36th is just a bit too high-octane for my old-school ears. But if you're tired of too much treble in a bridge HBer...
