Dimarzio 36th anniversary

Reckless Abandon

Put one in my epi SG. It is one of the best pickups I've used. Dynamics are great. It has a spongy quality but tight at the same time. Great clean or with high gain.

Re: Dimarzio 36th anniversary

A swing and a homerun for dimarzio with the 36th for sure!:)
even some of the guys over at the LP forum rave about the 36th and trust me that says something! LOL

Re: Dimarzio 36th anniversary

I had one in the neck of my Les Paul but it wasnt as good there as the old DP103. Put it in the bridge of my Hamer now.

Re: Dimarzio 36th anniversary

Ive been using Duncans for years, but I keep thinking about trying a few DMZs. Ive been interested in this one for sure. Super D/36th paf, maybe?

Re: Dimarzio 36th anniversary

Buddy at work loaned me a Super D to try in my LP Custom. Wife and I are moving to a new house, so I'll get to put it through it's paces a little louder than at the apartment we're in at the moment. ;)

Back off that pot ...
Yep, then the lows get muffled. You have to keep going back and forth on the tone pot, around 7-8 tames the highs but muffles the lows.

Good sounding pickup, but in some guitars its irritating.

My guitar is set neck mahogany so highs are smooth for me.
Same here: I hated it in my SG, but ironically it kills in my ash Telegib.

Re: Dimarzio 36th anniversary

I was curious about these for my Les Paul but stayed true to the Duncan and got a Pearly gates set (gold cover) very pleased with them. How does the 36th compare to the Pearly set?

Re: Dimarzio 36th anniversary

Never used a PG bridge before, can't compare that. But the PGn is warmer and smoother than the 36th. To me the 36th has edge and it really pops in the neck and can almost get Fenderish in that regard.

They are both variations of a old PAF,since all PAF's were not created equal back in the day we have all these variations.
The PG's are known for their presence and growl and the dimarzios are known for their smoother,Good punchy tone with amazing harmonic over tones and a 3D like quality.

Re: Dimarzio 36th anniversary

^^^ funny because I have both at them moment and find more growl and bite in the Dimarzio and the PG is smoother.

While the PG is an edgier pickup compared to other Duncans, I think Duncans overall tend to be smoother than Dimarzios. IMO Dimarzios are nastier across the board. Just the way they are.

Re: Dimarzio 36th anniversary

I just got an Ibanez Artcore AG95, which i love. Pickups are dull and muddy, so I'm considering a Dimarzio 36th in the bridge and a Pearly Gates in the neck. I've heard the PG bridge is weak but the neck is amazing.

Any thoughts? Would love some firsthand feedback!

That's not true. The PG bridge is amazing. I find the PG neck a bit dark, but in a Les Paul or strat it's pretty good. I wouldn't recommend blending the 36th with a PG. Either go PG set or 36th set. The 36th neck is calibrated to be open and present like a vintage Les Paul pickups. I think if you're going to mix the 36th, the Jazz would be a better fit.

Re: Dimarzio 36th anniversary

Howdy,

I'm pleased with the 36th Anni PAF in the bridge of my ES-335. It replaced an SH-1 '59, which proved too trebly with my new Carmen Ghia amp. BTW, I replaced the "boomy" '59 in the neck with an Air Classic and I'm pleased with the Air Classic/36th Anni combination.

PS: The world's greatest P/Us are still Duncan's vintage soapbars.
