Dimarzio AT-1 with sound sample

Here is a sample of a Dimarzio AT-1 installed in my Ibanez RG1570. I used an Engl Screamer with an Eminence Governor, and the same settings I always use - knobs usually around 12:00. Lead tone first and then some rhythm.

You can hear how bright and tight this pickup is. There's no so much of a spike in the mid-mids like the Norton, and there is a little more upper mid and treble. It has great clarity.

Let me know what you think.

sounds sorta like the axis bridge pu, it has a much better bite/crispness than the air zone or the breed i think i will like this dimarzio

It's their take on the JB that Andy loved for years.

Ibanez use Dimarzio exclusively and needed something for his signature model.

I think it sounds better in your guitar than it did for me in mine, makes me want it back when I hear your clips. Having tried both now, do you think the AT-1 has looser low end than the Norton and brighter top end? Is the Ibanez you have it in Alder or Basswood? The Norton has not arrived yet, I am eager to hear it to compare. Please shoot me the tracking # for the Norton.

You have a good ear. I would agree that is a good description of it. However, funny thing is that I had an AT-1 before and this one sounds a little brighter. I guess there's some deviation in pickup tone no matter if they're machine winded, etc... My new JB is better than any JB I had before and it's less bright, tighter, and more lows/low mids than I'm used to in a JB.

So you're saying that Andy used Dimarzio out of convenience because he endorses Ibanez and not because he thinks Dimarzio is capable of producing a quality pickup?

I definitely don't get the JB vibe from this pickup. The AT-1 is a little brighter than a JB too. If anything it's a cross beetween a Pearly Gates and a Duncan Custom or something, but not a JB. If it was modeled after a JB, I would be surprised.

Mmmm that sounded real nice. Good vibrato, dude!

Thanks for the compliment. I'm no Eric Clapton though.

My Ibanez is basswood, but I would say it's a slightly brighter basswood than usual. Is yours a Prestige? I know that the basswood in Pretiges are far different from the basswood they use in their other models. That could make all the diffrerence.

I would say the AT-1 is fairly tight. At first it seemed a little loose but then I realized it just has an awesome reponse. Chords just roll right out with great definition. I think part of its definition is from it's enhanced presence. It's brighter than the Norton in the high mids and treble. It seems a little harsh when you play it, but as you hear in the recording, it lays out nicely.

The Norton has more in the mid-mids than the AT-1 which seems to have more in the high-mids and treble. The Norton is not loose, but has a spongier response than the AT-1. The Norton is my favorite pickup because it has the tone and the perfect output.

I would say the AT-1 shares some of the top end characteristics of the Fred, and not as thick as a Norton.

I hope this helps. I PM'd you back. Looks like it was delivered. PM me later and let me know how it turned out.

Sounds great! I've got an AT-1 sitting here waiting on a pickguard to come in so I can load it up in my strat, now I can't wait.

IMPORTANT ADVICE: raise the pickup close to your strings. I had it at a medium distance at first but it was just a little tiny bit harsh and the output was barely a mismatch for my Air Norton neck. I raised the pickup pretty close to the strings and bam! It was like magic.

Now it's warm, defined, smooth and bright exactly the way I expect it to sound and the output perfectly matches with my Air Norton neck. This is a pickup that definitely sounds better closer to the strings.

Kinda, Andy used a JB and two Dimarzio Cruisers for a long time. He liked the JB with a 250k volume pot, but he liked the Cruisers with 500ks. Since he was with Ibanez he decided to get Dimarzio to make a bridge pickup that sounds similar to a JB with 250k pots...with 500k pots

Well the JB is a great pickup so that's cool. Do you know which album he used a JB in?

Re: Dimarzio AT-1 with sound sample

I am very anxious to try one of these. I got a good feeling about this dimarzio. every clip i have heard so far(about 10 including the andy ones) all sound amazing. I wonder if this pup likes marshalls as much as it does mesa? i have a modded SLP

Re: Dimarzio AT-1 with sound sample

heres another clip showcasing the AT-1 as well as the cruisers which are also amazing pu's

Re: Dimarzio AT-1 with sound sample

I have the AT1 in the bridge of my Virtuoso. I also have an Area 67 and Heavy Blues II in the neck, insanely versatile combo folks. The AT1 also splits amazingly well with the Area 67. I'll post vids soon.

Re: Dimarzio AT-1 with sound sample

The AT1 is tight, but not over the top which is great. Just a great all around hard rock brightish bridge pickup. I can go from Albert Cummings type rhythm tones on the neck pickup, to John Mayer pop radio/blues tones at the 4th position to Satriani/Timmons lead tones at the bridge. The 2nd position also gets close to some cool fusion tones with a slight over drive and sounds similar to a lot of the up and coming Suhr guys. Well, my guitar is kind of meant to compete with Suhr/Anderson stuff anyways

sounds like a winner for sure. i just hope it has the aggression i like. i can always de-air it for a more in yer face tone:naughty:

Re: Dimarzio AT-1 with sound sample

I've got the AT1 installed in a Tokai Love Rock and it's a crunchy pickup. Can get pretty aggressive when pushed. What's more, it's got some serious dynamics. Matches well with PAF 36 in the neck.
