DiMarzio Breed = The Secks

So in my quest to achieve that beautiful tone that Andy Timmons gets on his Resolution disc, I tried a Breed bridge pickup in my Peavey strat clone. Can I just say that next to the Duncan P-Rail, this is my favorite bridge bucker. It is warm and fat with just enough top end to not get muddy. You can get some very ZZ Top Rhythmeen types of tones with it. It nails Andy's tones (if I could just nail his playing!)

I think it is a perfect counter balance to the P-Rail in my Les Paul. It has a very vocal singing quality. If you have a bright amp, this is the pickup that I would recomend!

Re: DiMarzio Breed = The Secks

Welcome to the club, man.

I love Seymour Duncan, but there's no humbucker I'd rather have in the bridge position of my guitar than a Dimarzio Breed. I love it for high gain "British" sounds. Thick and bity for rhythm, sings in the leads...

Now add a switch or something to coil tap it, and you'll be in heaven. It sounds beautiful tapped. Bright, crunchy as hell, but not thin or brittle. I even use it more tapped than in full humbucker mode.

Re: DiMarzio Breed = The Secks

I've heard nothing but good things about the Breed. The guitar I ternd to turn to for tones like that is my strat with the PATB-3 in the bridge, but I think my next guitar I'll experiment outside of SD for a bit.

Re: DiMarzio Breed = The Secks

The single worst DiMarzio I have ever owned. I tried the Breed in three different guitars (basswood, mahogany, and alder), nothing could make that pup sound good.

This is exactly why I love the fact there are so many different pickups out there. There is no "holy grail" that fits everyone. Tone is subjective and, there's something out there for everyone.

Re: DiMarzio Breed = The Secks

But do they sound muddy in a Les Paul? How are they in alder guitars?

I currently have the Breed in an alder guitar. Sounds great. I also tried in in an ESP Eclipse that was all mahogany. Sounded great there as well, but I play the strat more than the ESP.

Exactly... :friday:

I just was never able to get any kind of sound I liked with it.

Re: DiMarzio Breed = The Secks

I put a pair of Breeds into an alder/maple soloist.
They were taken out a couple of days later and returned.

Flat, too even everywhere, as in no dynamics. Compressed sounding, not in a "compressor" sense, but in a squashed sense. The tonal curve in Breeds is flatty-flat, and with their high output, they are super flat.

They did warm up a super bright guitar though. And splitting the coils did sound very pretty. Alder and maple did seem like the best tonewoods for them. However, these were dead pieces of Warmoth wood, so if you disagree with me about the Breeds, join me in blaming that guitar for everything.

Re: DiMarzio Breed = The Secks

......Buy a better amp....hahahaha
Or stop using Warmoth crap;)
Maybe....use ToneWounds übervoodoo pickups:D
What ever....they are not flat

They absolutely are flat. You know how S Duncan has a tone chart with a B/M/T rating to give you an idea how a given pickup sounds?

Well if there was one for the Breed it would be something like "5 5 5".

And that's all I meant. Plus, they're high output, so that flat curve is enhanced.

And believe me, I've stopped using Warmoth. I'm happy with my amp, guitars, pickups, and gear.

DiMarzio list it as T5 M9 B8.

I don't care for it either, I just can't place why... Just not my thing I guess.

is that neck, bridge, or both?

yeah that makes sense. That's actually kinda how they sounded to me. Thick and dull.

don't see many SD's with a curve like that - but maybe they use a different rating scale....

It does feel a bit squashed and flat to me in it's dynamics IMO. But if I want more of that, I just split it. :) Problem solved.

Frankly, I think the Breed is even better split than in series. I use it full just for solos, and split for everything!
