DiMarzio Breed = The Secks

Re: DiMarzio Breed = The Secks

Dynamics..and all the rubbish...will come from your amp....not a bloody pickup!
Unless everything is overly gained and compressed into the next world...then it is of no matter anyways.

Re: DiMarzio Breed = The Secks

Hmm.... dunno Rid. Ever tried a Dimarzio X2N? That thing could play itself. It's definitely got a flatter response. And I always try to use as less gain as possible.

Ever tried the Breed split?

Re: DiMarzio Breed = The Secks

I never use split..only seriel/parallel.
X2N still depends on amp and speakers.....my Stevens Special is very even sounding...but not flat...the Breed is middy and fat....sounds juicy and sweet here.

Re: DiMarzio Breed = The Secks

I used to own an Andy Timmons AT300 guitar. His sig pickup is a modified Breed...a little more upper midrange. Loved the pickup but the guitar just wasnt good enough to stick with from a build quality standpoint....I am convinced that is why Andy seems to use the old guitar and rarely used the 300 model.

I currently have a Breed bridge mated with a PAF Pro in a Brian Moore Custom Shop guitar. Great combo.

Re: DiMarzio Breed = The Secks

They absolutely are flat. You know how S Duncan has a tone chart with a B/M/T rating to give you an idea how a given pickup sounds?

Well if there was one for the Breed it would be something like "5 5 5".

.

Dimarzio DOES use a tone chart....for the Breed they are charted as follows:

Bridge Model
DC Resistance : 17.07K
Bass : 8
Middle : 9
Treble : 5

Neck Model
DC Resistance : 10.17K
Bass : 7.5
Middle : 7.5
Treble : 5

That is pretty accurate too

didnt cover the specs for both positions before.

The breed neck actually makes a pretty good bridge pickup too.

Re: DiMarzio Breed = The Secks

I have a Breed neck in a 24 fret basswood RG, and I think it's great in there. Whenever I try the Screamin Demon in the neck (with two rows of allen poles) it hits the same nerve. I'm not saying they're totally interchangeable, but if I have Duncans in the other positions I would use the Demon to match. I won't change it, but if I sold the guitar I would just use a Demon next time because I have a couple.

I have my Breed neck with a Super 3 in the bridge, which is a scorcher. While it doesn't sound "like" the Breed bridge, it's very loud with a highly "oppressed" top end, and in that way they are alike. I do (as others have mentioned) consider the Breed bridge as a "fix" for a brittle sounding guitar. It kind of has a "250k pot" effect, but localized to that pickup. So if you split to single with a middle single coil, it brightens up nicely.

Personally I'll always tout the Alternative 8 over the Breed, just because it has top end presence where the Breed shaves it off.
