DiMarzio fans...

I went a bit OCD last night and made this from the DiMarzio tone chart:
tonechartdcresistance.jpg

Or, you can view them sorted by:
output
bass
mids
treble

I think it's fairly useful in helping choose pickups, as I find it a lot easier to work from a graph than from a chart. I hope you guys get some use out of it. I'd like to hear your opinions of the various models, too, especially things like the Air Zone, Tone Zone, and Breed.

And for Duncans:

Thanks!

Edit: added Duncan mini-hum graph

I thought the X2n would be the hottest by far . . . but it does not look like it is the case ?

Re: DiMarzio fans...

Nice. Good job on that.

Yes, the Air Zone is really that hot, in DC resistance number only. The actually output of it is lower, much lower. It has the Airbucker technology so the actual output is lower than the Tone Zone and even the Super Distortion. It's actually a medium output pickup by their standards. The AZ is one of my favorite DiMarzios right next to the PAF (old design), PAF Pro, Super Distortion and Air Norton/Air Norton S.

Re: DiMarzio fans...

What do the colors represent? I'm a little lost on this one. The names from left to right represent output level or tonality (EQ)? The Humbucker from Hell is probably the brightest (bucker) so I can see it being to the far left, but the X2N on the opposite side of the scale strikes me as odd if it is saying it is that warm or bass heavy.

Re: DiMarzio fans...

The names along the x axis are the names of the pickups, and they're arranged in order of DC resistance, low to high, left to right. (It's a very rough indicator of output). The different lines are the EQ (bass, mid, and treble) and the DC resistance. So just look along the bottom for the pickup you want, and check the points above it. For instance, you can see the X2N is actually reasonably balanced compared to a lot of the other pickups, but it has a high DC resistance.

These graphs show how EQ and Output (in millivolts) are related to DC resistance. I'm going to see if I can incorporate Output into the big tone chart now, as I just figured out how I can do it :)

Re: DiMarzio fans...

Ok the names are DC resistance low to high left to right gotcha there. The lines are low mid high, but what color represents each? Also there are 4 lines and low/mid/high should be 3... Also what are the numbers representative of on the Y axis?

EDIT: Nevermind I didn't scroll to the right I saw the KEY there representing the colors.

Re: DiMarzio fans...

I just updated my original post with the new version of the chart. The "output" line is relative in that it doesn't actually equate with the numbers on the y axis, (the numbers on the y-axis actually represent 2% of the actual millivolt value of the pickups, so the X2N comes in at 500mV).

If there is any demand, I can do similar charts for single coils or whatever :)

Re: DiMarzio fans...

pareto that bad boy on each of the five variables and we are in business.

Re: DiMarzio fans...

Sorry - PhD got the best of me! Sort the names of the pup based of treble (lowest to highest), bass, mids, output, etc...so we can find what we need fast.

Then go do it for the Duncan catalog!!!!!

After that we'll talk about the duncan vs DiMarzio Pivot tables.

Re: DiMarzio fans...

Hehe, the resorting of the DiMarzios is done, and the links are in the original post :) I'd be happy to do them for Duncans, but the tone chart isn't very accurate and error free for me to work from. I guess I'll just do the bridge version DC Resistance and the basic EQs :)

edit: added the duncan chart and other dimarzio charts to my original post

Re: DiMarzio fans...

Fred= more gain and mids. Satriani's bridge pup - 6/6/5
Tone Zone= boosted lows, mids, and highs. Overated- 6/8/9
Super Distortion= more bass and mids. 70's/80's classic rock/metal- 6/8/8
Super II= Like Super D with more treble- 8/6/4

I have a Breed Bridge and it's nowhere near as hot or compressed or insane as the X2N, which is right below the Breed on the chart. So it's not that simple it seems.

Re: DiMarzio fans...

I don't mean to hi-jack the thread, but could you tell me how hot the breed bridge is compared to your JB in the neck ? I've had JBs in neck positions and they were very loud and hot and they overpowered nearly everything I threw in the bridge. I like my bridge pickup to overpower the neck a tiny bit so that when I switch to the bridge I hear a large mid-boost. Is this what's happening with your current configuration ?

Thanx
