DiMarzio fans...

Re: DiMarzio fans...

This is neato. This thread should be stuckied.

For the Duncan chart, you could include "resonant peak", and include the differences between bridge and neck models. I mean, if you want; I know you did this all voluntarily.

Re: DiMarzio fans...

The only reason I didn't include the difference between the neck and bridge models is 'cause they only differ in DC resistance (according to the meagre information I have, anyway), I'll throw resonant peak in today, though :)

There. This thread has been "stuckied".

Re: DiMarzio fans...

I went a bit OCD last night and made this from the DiMarzio tone chart:

:scratchch
It might only be me... but almost everything from the PAF to the Bluesbucker has very similar output and EQ (which is very flat BTW).

We're talking about 9 or 10 pickups that going only by their specs should sound almost the same...

Re: DiMarzio fans...

If you look at each of the charts for the sorted eq curves, it totally supports our theory/statements that Dimarzio is all about bass/mids with not so much treble. The bass and mid lines continue upwards while the treble stays much lower and is flatter.

Also, the X2N, while not the greatest DC resistance (but high/close) is the hottest by a notable amount.

Can't wait to see the Duncan charts!

And Johnny - the various flavors of PAF would all be very similar. They are all minor variations on a single pup style/design.

Re: DiMarzio fans...

The Duncan chart's updated with resonant peak. I took some licence and assumed that the Duncan site typoed when they said Blackouts had a resonant peak of 530kHz, and assumed they meant 5.3kHz :) A graph for the singles will be done in the morning :)

Re: DiMarzio fans...

That would be an incorrect correction. The resonant peak on the Blackouts is not 5.3khz, it's 530Hz. But on an active pickup you aren't limited by the resonant peak. So you can have a peak down at 530 but it doesn't mean it's at the expense of high end. If a passive pickup had a peak at 530 it would likely mean that the treble was nonexistent, unless that peak was reached via coil loading.

Re: DiMarzio fans...

This is very cool.... because I am try to compare a SD PG vs. DMZ Air Norton.
Tone wise they sound somewhat similar... from your chart I should be able to tell the differences.

My situation is: a thin sounding PRS Bridge pos. PG a tad to bright, CC too dark, Air Norton sounds good... (at home)
But you never really know until you gig it, just what it's gonna turn out to be.

I have many other pickups to try also... I can't wait to chart them out...
Thanks be for your graphs dude! Just might save me some time.

Jazz in the neck is awesome... will be interested in comparing it to EJ neck on your charts.

Thanks Sonny, I'm glad it's been of some use to you :)

Thanks for the correction, Frank :) I figured the 530kHz on the site was wrong, but I didn't know for sure which way to go with it. I fixed up my error, and have added the chart for the single coils. Minihums are coming soon :)

Re: DiMarzio fans...

Howdy,

SD isn't the only ingredient in my tonal stew! While it's true that I'm very happy with SD's Vintage P-90s and '59s, I also like DiMarzio's Twang Kings.
The Twang Kings in my USACG flamed Mahogany Tele are perfect for everything from The Streets of Bakersfield all the way to Exiles on Main Street.

Re: DiMarzio fans...

I can't believe the difference in tone between the Norton & Air Norton, when their specs
are the same, even DC Resistance? (DiMarzio's specs must be wrong here) and your chart is correct.

What causes the differance in thier Output and tone?
I know construction is different (Air spacers)

I mean the Norton sounds like it is all Thick Fat Mids... the Air Norton sounds closer to a PG!

Re: DiMarzio fans...

Judging solely from the graphs (without hearing the pickups) it looks to me like the EQ is the same, but there is a drastic drop in output for the Air Norton. I don't know if that reflects reality or not, of course :)

I added a Duncan Minihum chart, btw :)
