Dimarzio Gravity!

Re: Dimarzio Gravity!

I like it, I think it's Vai's best tone since the David Lee Roth Eat Em and Smile days when he was using X2N's. Very 80's Jake E Lee tone too!

I'm here. I haven't had a chance to give a full review, I have written a little piece on them though. Check out the blog. :)

As a brief the bridge model feels a bit like a more modern Super Distortion, with more clarity. Neck is kind of like a PAF Pro or similar with faster attack due to the ceramic magnet.

Re: Dimarzio Gravity!

A member of Vai forum said that according to Larry it is designed like a mix of Super Distortion on steroids and Mo' Joe. I wonder what is Vai's intent with this new pickup. He seems to never really settled on some things. He used True Temperament fretting system on his particular guitar, but rumor said that Ibanez can't make that JEM mass-produced because it will cost you so much. Then his later JEMs have full scalloped frets. Then this pickup after Evo, Evo 2 and Breed. Even his Legacy amps goes to third version. Maybe that's what it means to be a real artist. :D

IMO most of Vais tone comes from his rack and now AxeFX unit. With the original Legacy, he needed to use a tube screamer and ds1, then the Ibanez Jemini pedal to get his tone. The Legacy 2 was a bit of a flop, while it did have Ben Fargens input in the power scaling , no one saw Vai use them live- he stuck to his original Legacys and rack. Now he has the Legacy 3, where he claims he needs no pedals, yet in the demo he still has it plugged into an AxeFX unit

The Axe does the reverbs and delays...

Re: Dimarzio Gravity!

Oooo color me WAY interested!

Both sound way cool but the neck, in particular, has my full attention.

Re: Dimarzio Gravity!

They finally posted the specs on the website.

Neck model looks way too dark for me. Pass.

Bridge however looks very interesting. If the tone chart means anything (and often it means squat, or even seems oposite of reality) then it will be like a medium output, A5 version of the Super 3. I'd guess that will give it a more complex tonal character, which is exactly what the Super 3 lacks, while still performing the function of taking the *ouch* out of a too-bright guitar. Very interesting. A tonally complex, lower output version of a Super 3 would have me shedding some cash.

I'm growing more and more interested the more I learn about these pups. I think these are a must have for me.

Definitely not too dark. It's a little like a PAF Pro, which is definitely not dark. More immediate attack with the ceramic magnet, and a little more output. Has some single coil type characteristics to the tone too.

Re: Dimarzio Gravity!

Wow, too dark, it's quite bright in the neck, well that's what most seem to find.

I don't find it quite bright. It isn't as bright as say a Jazz, not nearly as bright as an EJ special, and nowhere near as bright as a Humbucker from Hell.

Really has more to do with the low end anyway; I find it far too muddy on the low notes for the neck position. In the bridge it can sound great in the right guitar.

Back to the Gravities: I talked to Steve Blucher about these yesterday and I got the impression he really didn't agree with the tone chart vis a vis the other pickups on their site. The tone chart indicates it has a severe high end roll off, but Steve said it was a lot more open and articulate than that would indicate, certainly a lot less dark than a Super 3, which the tone chart shows the Gravity being darker than. He sort of made it sound more like a lighter wind of a Breed.

Re: Dimarzio Gravity!

^^^^^^^

This is why I typically ignore tone charts, EQ's, and all that other smoke and mirror approach to advertising pickups. Personal experience tells me you can plug 2 of the same guitars into 1 amp and they can sound exponentially different. There is just no good way to even begin to put into words for every guitar/amp/setup out there. You just have to try it for yourself.
