DiMarzio Help Desired...

Guitarist

Mesa-ologist
Hey there,

I'm pretty interested in giving the DiMarzio line of pickups a shot in my Soloist soon. If I want a bridge tone that resembles the smoothness of the JB with the aggression of the Custom, where should I be looking?

The neck is looking to be a PAF Pro or an Air Norton. I really love the openness of both of those pickups. Damn. I'm getting wet just thinking about their voices.

Thanks for your help!

Re: DiMarzio Help Desired...

First you could write Dimarzio's customer support for advice, with a description of your axe and goals. They'll recommend you one, two or maybe more models. That'll narrow it down quite nicely.

If you wanted to spend more and not only on Dimarzios, I'd say try a Bare Knuckle 'Nailbomb', it has similar characteristics as the JB but without the high-mid spike. It's handmade and scatterwound (more articulation, more open top-end), and you can order some killer finishes for its cover, too. :headbang:

Re: DiMarzio Help Desired...

I like the Super Distortion. It's aggressive, but not as compressed as the JB.

Re: DiMarzio Help Desired...

Check out either the Fred or Norton!!!! I have a Fred/PAF Pro combo in my Ibanez JS2000 and it absolutely rips for metal and everything else!!!!!!!

Re: DiMarzio Help Desired...

I tried the Air Norton in the neck position of my Wolfgang Special and I did'nt care for it. Very, very bassey with not enough clarity. I also tried and Air Classic neck pickup and even that was too bassey. I'm not slamming Dimarzio because I've got the Virtual PAF's in my LP Studio and I love them. I just think that my Wolfgang happens to be a very 'bassey' piece of wood.

Re: DiMarzio Help Desired...

Special order a MegaDrive. Do it... don't think about it, just go order it. You will thank me.

Really.

Go now and do it... :)

Re: DiMarzio Help Desired...

I have an Air Norton and an Air Zone in a Wolfgang Special and love it. The Air Zone is reversed eq'd from the jb (more bottom mid range vs high mid range) and has been discribed as a PAF on steriods. Just remember that you have to play with the pups in order to get the voicing you are looking for (meaning tuning your amp settings)

Re: DiMarzio Help Desired...

The Air Norton is one of my favorite neck pickups of all time. It can go from very round sounding to fairly aggressive and vocal depending on your pick attack, and stays nice and clear under gain IMO. A great example of this pickup at work is Petrucci's solo in the Dream Theater song "Scarred" from the album Awake. Very very cool.

that was an awesome song and solo. the tone was sweet too, but different pick ups respond differently depending on the player even though they have much to do with the overall tone. I am ordering a dimarzio for my neck pick up soon!!!!! It has been a while since i have had a dimarzio equipped axe.
