Dimarzio HS-3 and YJM

I understand the these pickups are stacked humbuckers? so they are not true single coil pickups, correct?

in the tone and dynamics depts, are they more closer to a full-size humbucker or a single-coil? or neither? do they fall somewhere between?

I've read several Yngwie interviews where he blasts humbuckers and glorifies single coils, waxing poetic about "true" guitar tone and whatnot. but....does he not, in fact, use humbucking pickups (HS-3/YJM) in his Strats?

am I confused? yes
am I on meds? yes
do I reside in a mental hospital? yes
does any of this matter? no :9:

but someone please educate me

Re: Dimarzio HS-3 and YJM

they're humbuckers, but they're real low output. maybe he was referring to what people generally think about lower output pups having better tone. i recently tried some at the guitar center and thought they sound like malmsteen, but that's about it. if you want to sound like malmsteen, there you go. personally, i the hot alnico 3 stock pups that come with american strats sound better.

Re: Dimarzio HS-3 and YJM

I particially agree with shogun. The HS3 and YJM pickups have a certain envelope they work in, much like a jb, 59, super d etc do. Malmsteen's sound comes from his marshall's, dod 250 preamps (grey one) and the dimarzio pickups he uses. I have the HS3/YJM combo in my strat and it doesn't sound anything like Yngwie partically because I'm using a line 6 marshall model with the distortion on (actually sounds closer to Blackmore than Malmsteen). If you want your strat to "Rock" you can't go wrong with these.

I have a malmsteen strat with the stock pup combo and i really like the YJM and HS-3. Very clear and great for articualte rock and shred.
