Dimarzio polepieces

I want an evo set. However, the allen screw poles look cheesy to me. Will it effect the tone to swap them out? Does Duncan make Evo like pickups? In the past the verdict was no, but it took some digging to find those threads.

Re: Dimarzio polepieces

Also, it would help if anyone has suggestions for a evo like tone in a koina and maple body.

Re: Dimarzio polepieces

Hey bro.

Do NOT, repeat NOT be turned off by the allen screws. They totally rule. You can fine tune your pickup to a MUCH finer degree than with a regular old slug/screw type pickup.

Two of my favorite pickups are the Dimarzio SDS-1 (single coil) and DiMarzio Breed bridge (bucker). Those allen screws on the bucker allow you to emphasize whether you want EACH string to pickup sound closer to the neck or bridge. Very flexible indeed. There is a REASON those allen screws are there. Take advantage of em. :D

Don't let that issue blind you to what are some very high quality, musical pickups. No lie.

Peace!

While I personally find the above statements to be true most of the time ... I believe they are threaded the same as the screws types ... unscrew one from a pup that has those and check it, then take a trip to a hardware store ... the wider head of the screw generally increases the magnetic field a bit, while at the same time spreading it over a bit larger area. To me they soften the attack of the string a bit. I like the allen heads myself though, but it's personal choice ... you might ask stratdeluxer (can never remember the number ), as I think he changed out the allen poles on a Fred for screw heads.

Re: Dimarzio polepieces

the pole piece types do affect tone, with the allen heads a little more percussive. cool with hotter pups, not to my taste with lower output varietys.
duncan doesnt really make anything ive tried like the evo

Personally I've never tried the EVO's, and o be honset with you don't want to ... off topic, but ... I know it's a stupid reason, but I hate the way they describe them .... now I know that a description is subjective, and doesn't reflect the tone ... but a pup that's not *polite sounding*, that I don't need, I can get as rude as I want ... i be more interested in knowing how warm, and clean they are ... just venting the brain cells a bit with an off topic thought.

Re: Dimarzio polepieces

EVO's are great pickups with a very aggressive lyrical tone. I'd definitely give them a try. If you don't like them, DiMarzio has a very generous 30 day exchange policy. If you like the way EVO's sound as much as I do, you aren't going to care how the pole pieces look.

Re: Dimarzio polepieces

Its just the fact that I want a more traditional look and the sound of the Evos. I am starting to think I am asking too much

Re: Dimarzio polepieces

Hey, by this point a DiMarzio Super Distortion (allen screws) is as "traditional looking" as anything considering it's been around longer than many forum members.

:D

Well, just replace the polepieces ... like I said PM stratdeluxer, I believe he did this very thing to a FRED ... no big, unscrew the old ones, and screw in the new ones, adjust to taste, a plat immediately ... serves an audience of 1 to 100,000 ... :laugh2:

:laugh2: ... ya, ... well, ....that's a valid point also ... :laugh2:

Re: Dimarzio polepieces

Howdy..... What are the size of the hex screws for the SDS1 & SUPER DISTORTION?

Re: Dimarzio polepieces

The Evo and SuperD hex pole pieces are larger than the standard fillister screw type poles used on most other pickups, such as Duncan. They are also a different alloy. To get a fillister-style screw in the same size, you'll end up with a pickup that looks a lot like a Duncan Invader. That said, it could be a fun mod that helps smooth out the Evo's bite a little

EDIT: Just realized that a thread from 2004 got bumped for a related, yet unrelated question...ugh. If you want answers, start a new thread, dude!
