Dunno if this is a completel5 blasphemous question around these parts but is it possible to combine a dimarzio coil with a duncan coil?

No, they'll be a chemical reaction between the two brands of PU's, and cause them to melt.

Just kidding. Mix any coils you want. You can get lots of interesting things. Let us know what you paired up and how it sounded.

Greetings! Not blasphemous at all. We are obviously Duncan fans here, but the bottom line is tone.

I personally can see an Awesome combo of a superD for bass/mid thickness and a Duncan Distortion for mid/high scream. Could be very interesting.


Or maybe the Universe will explode. Try it and find out!

Aaah thx guys.. i have a dmz breed, absolutely love the low/low mids but it def needs a high/mid high spike.... now i dont own a jb but there's something about the tight mids i am missing in the breed.. so i thought why not combine em ;)

Both seem to be in the 16k range.. allthough i dont know if the breed already has asymetrical coils..i dont see the dual resonance patent listed on the dmz site.. so hopefully it doesnt matter which coil ill use

And yes i like mids in my pickups ;) besides personal taste i play in a full (and loud) band, i need to cut through

Hybrid PU's are still a new frontier for the vast majority of us here, and we do a lot more things than the average player. So it's hard to say what will happen when you pair up different coils, many combinations probably haven't been tried. But assymentrical coils in a HB is something that gets us excited. It's a cool thing. We encourage experimentation.

BTW, most of us own PU's of other brands besides Duncans too. Seymour's open-minded and we're free to talk about any PU's, guitars, amps, etc here.

The hybrid idea actually has been around and done by quite a few of us say end of 04/early 05..I built quite a few for forum members..Thanks to Bach To Rock's info!

Hmm Duncan+Dimarzio = a GOOd sounding pickup with a cocked wah sound... hahahahaha

Nah that would be too cool for that to happen. I would like to mix a Tone Zone with an Alternative 8, and use the A8 magnet with the DiMarzio baseplate.

just buy a DOMINION bridge model then?
it is a breed with more highs/presence and is a lot tighter

Aaah yeah i heard some good stories about the dominion... think im gonna try a transition first tho (lukathers new line at dmz) and this hybrid offcourse :)
