Anyone familiar with this pickup? A friend recomends it as a Les Paul pickup based on the EQ curve and output. The reviews I read say it works well in thick mahogany guitars.

Thanks!!

its high output with a good bottom and strong top with the mids pulled back some to give clarity. its a good sounding pup, i have mine matched with a fred in the neck

sorta, the c5 is more vintage sounding. the steves special is a little more aggressive

I'm not sure that's a Steve's Special. It's my understanding that ever since John switched to a Music Man guitar, it's a custom pickup designed specifically for John. He used to use a SS when he used an Ibanez though. But that clip is from a song from the new album, which would have been the Music Man AFAIK.
isn't it based on the steve and the air norton though?

Listen to a classic Dream Theater song like 'Pull me under'... i know for certain that the rhythm line is played with a Steve's Special.

Back then he was using an Ibanez JPM.

Is the SS warm?? I know Duncan "hand winds" its pickups......which adds warmth. What about the SS??

The whole vintage thing bothers me...because I know it is a general way of descriping a p'up and it's characteristics.....but I have heard guys get amazing modern tones with the C-5 as have I with my Dean.

It sounds like the SS is similar to the Custom.

the ss isnt the warmest thing i have. flipping it over can really make a difference in warmth too, one way its REALLY bright the other its much better. i cant remember which way is which, but the coils must be mismatched or something.
the ss has less mids than the custom and they are voiced differently. the c5 has a more similar eq curve to the ss.
the c5 can work very well for modern rock, just cause something has a "more vintage" tone doesnt mean its only for classic rock. a 59 or jazz can do down tuned metal really well, they just dont have the output or the pushed mids that modern high output pups do.
its all about what you want and what other gear your using.

Good stuff Jeremy. BTW, what kind of guitar do you have the SS in?
