Speaking of shoes, I totally heard blue canvas top, white bottom Converse low-tops in all of the first album clips, especially the isolated ones where the instruments are completely stripped away so you can hear the artists walking around. I've listened to them hundreds of times through my laptop speakers, so I know for sure. Most others seeking EVH's first album tone have overlooked this critical information. IMO, without the shoes, trying to replicate the rest of the rig is pointless.
I'm sure Pittbull will chime in with his opinion about what shoes he heard in all the clips he's listened to, but I'm still 99% sure THAT sound is blue and white low-top Cons.

I get pretty close with my white on black Vans Old Skools, but it's a bit harsh with my black on black pair.

100% agree. On top of that, I heard Eddie may have switched the original laces out for some on a pair of Keds the studio manager was throwing out right before the band went in to record. If so, then even if you DID get the rest of the shoes right, it's impossible to know if you have the right laces and it goes without saying...without the right laces, the tone simply can't be replicated in all of its original glory.

Where did you find the low top version? The low tops I`ve seen had the black binding around the shoes and not white

So, totally random...while searching for something unrelated to this thread (I promise), I stumbled across a post by Pittbull from 2006 in a thread titled "Van Halen 1 Sound" in which he stated the following:

After listen to all of Mark’s (Rockstah Mod 5) clips, the clip with Marks Orange tolex amp, Mark is using a Motor city black belt pickup in that clip which is a PAF type pickup vs the Dimarzio Super Distortion which Mark used for the majority of his clips, the clip with the Motor City Blackbelt sounds more Van Halen 1 sounding its more open and aggressive, The Super Distortion sounds good but not as open sounding, the Super Distortion has this less open sounding.

Bro, I'm interested in the topic, but it's been beaten to death already and you have a long-standing history of rehashing the same thing over and over again, in multiple threads and on multiple forums. Your fleeing conclusions aren't new. The stuff you come up with is already known/discussed/out there and usually you end up contradicting yourself or arguing with forum members at some point. This entire thread is a good example of that. I can't figure out why you don't just buy all of the EVH-related pickups and try them out for yourself? How are you still searching for answers after more than a decade?
