Dimarzio Super Distortion Van halen 1 sound(first album)

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortion Van halen 1 sound(first album)

MastaC I was just listening to some clips there’s nothing that’s beaten to death new thoughts come up, so if it bothers you I don’t know what to tell you, anyway ..

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortion Van halen 1 sound(first album)

I know you from this and other forums where the same pattern has been going on for years. The conversation hasn't really moved forward and you've been told just about all the internet can tell you, plus you already have your mind made up about a lot of things concerning early VH.

"Listening to clips" is exactly how this thread (and most of your others over the past 10+ years) started out. You originally opened this one up by claiming the Super D was THE pickup for VH1. Then you admitted you hadn't actually tried one, but you could tell it was the right pickup from "all the clips" you had heard and you wanted to try one...that was 5 years ago this month. Now you're back posting new threads that are still asking about the Super D, which means you still haven't pulled the trigger.

Bro, just try one for yourself! It's a great pickup!

And, as for the PAF-types, plenty of people get incredibly believable VH1 sounds with PAF-style pickups, as well. The guitar and the rest of the rig play a big part. It's not just the pickup.

MastaC are you OK talk about trolling, you have no idea about this topic just go find something else to do. Discharged I see your point.

Trolling is posting and reposting about the same thing over and over again. You do it months and years apart, so it flies under the radar, but you never add anything new or worthwhile to the conversation. It's always "clips" and "clips" with you, but almost never about experience or discussion. When opinions differ from yours, you end up calling people jack-@$$es (see page 1 of this thread) and disappear, only to show up on another forum until you fight everyone and can't be seen there either.

Let's start this conversation again. I genuinely want to know...

Dear Pittbull,

1) Why haven't you tried a Super Distortion yet?

2) How much weight (in %) do you give pickup vs guitar vs amp vs effects vs studio tweaking in terms of achieving a true VH1 guitar sound?

3) What have you tried in the last 5 years since you started this thread...what has worked, what hasn't?

4) What is one piece of information most people get wrong about early VH that you wish everyone on the internet would change their minds about?

This goes back a ways (decade-plus) back when Mark Abrahamian was around... I think a lot of people listened to his VH tone test clips (he used a Super Distortion), and he got close, so people jumped on the "Ed used a DiMarzio Super Distortion" train.

I OTOH am convinced it was the Seymour Duncan SH-5 Custom (or prototype for Ed) in the Frankenstrat... based on magazine evidence, interview evidence and most importantly, gear testing evidence and tonal evidence.

For exhibit A (LOL), I give you my guitar with an SH-5, emulating studio magic and using real backing tracks - for Runnin' With The Devil:

LLL I was listening again to Mark A clips and I know Mark was using the Dimarzio Super Distortion for the majority of his clips, the clip that Mark was using his Orange tolex amp Mark was using a Motor city blackbelt pickup for that clip and to me it was very close to the VH 1 sound, that pickup is a alnico II paf type pickup it just sounded better then the Dimarzio Super Distortion in my opinion

Spot on! ...as always.

Motor city blackbelt pickup for that clip and to me it was very close to the VH 1 sound, that pickup is a alnico II paf type pickup

The A2 Black Belts came out later, if I recall correctly. The standard Black Belt has A4 and the "2nd Degree" has A5. Both are overwound PAF types (8.6K-8.8K).

The thing is, you can get "very close" with a LOT of pickups. The rest of the chain and how its recorded/mastered plays a much bigger part in the final sound.
